Ferulic acid and brown cream
Made a sample of a cream on 02/27/18 that started off white. I checked today and it is a nice brown/caramel color. The only thing in there that I suspect is the Ferulic acid at 0.5%. Never really worked much with this before. Has this ever happened to anyone else? The pH is between 6.0 to 7.0 Thanks.

I have had formulas with ferulic discolor, but there might be other suspects. You’ll get more help if you post the whole formula

Thanks, I should have known better. Here is a list of chemicals in order. I can’t post %. Shea butter is refined and about 3%, Ferulic as I mentioned is 0.5% so everything after that is less than 0.5%. There is no fragrance. Final ph is 6.0 to 7.0.Thanks

It could also be the green tea in your PI blend that has discoloured.

I haven’t used ferulic acid, but Ubiquinone that is supposed to be antioxidant, added at 0.2%, oxidises (in a formula with tocopherol and BHT similar to yours) and causes the product discoloration within just a couple of weeks. I did a knockout experiment and know it ‘s ubiquinone. So it is probably ferulic in your case too. I used Evonic’s ceramides in many different formulas (O/W, W/O) and have never noticed them causing any troubles.

On a website that sells DIY chemicals I saw the recommend “maintain final pH at acid levels of 3.2 to 3.4”. So maybe it’s the fact that my final ph is about 6.0 to 7.0. We have that pH due to the fact we are using Ultrez 21 in the formulation.
