  Emulsifying small amount of water in oil advice.

  Hi.

  I’m looking to emulsify a small amount of a water based extract into an oil serum. Around 2% of the total formula.

  Any suggestions on an emulsifier to achieve this? I’ve made emulsions in the past but mostly water in oil, not the other way around.

  I was looking at polysorbate 80. However, i get the impression that’s more of an o/w emulsifier not an w/o emulsifier.

  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  For a water in oil emulsion you want a high HLB value emulsifier. You can calculate the required HLB value of the oil component. This varies depending on what you type of oil and the percentage it makes of the oil phase. From this required value you should be able to find an emulsifier that matches your requirement. If not you can always mix a low and high HLB emulsifier. This system has the added benefit of being miscible in both the oil and water phase and should help to produce a more stable emulsion.

  in your cause i guess it is w/o emulsion so you will need w/o emulsifier wich has hlb below 6 and will be better below 5 generally @imhumble

  What is already in your oil serum? Only pure oils and nothing else?

  Yes, only carrier oils
