I have to put benzalkonium chloride in a water based gel formula. when I tried it created white streaks and turned into a lumpy mess.  Any ideas on how to use dissolve this or do I need to use triclosan as my antibacterial agent?

Sounds like an incompatibility between cationic and anionic raw materials. What is your gelling agent? Carbopol polymers are anionic.

If that gel is based on anionics, this is what you get by trying to dissolve a cationic.

wow!! didn’t even think that far!!1  I am using carrageenan/cmc for a gelling agent. So something like natrosol, cmc, xanthan gum etc?

When working with cationic antibacterials you cant use anionics, it will interfeer with the antibacterial properties. I think this is explained in the PDF Belassi posted in another related topic.

You can use a nonionic surfactant with higher HLB or ethanol to solublize it.
