  • Ceteareth 20 as emulsifier

    Posted by luiscuevasii on June 9, 2015 at 2:17 pm

    Greetings.

    Im want to know if anyone has used Ceteareth 20 (polyethylene glycol ether of cetearyl alcohol) as emulsifier in preparation of creams and lotions, im currently ussing Carbomer as emulsifier but im having incompatibilities with cationic and anionic surfactatns, i want to know:

    1) Does the ceteareth can be used as emulsifier by it self, i mean i dont need another emulsifier
    2) It is compatible with surfactants, i want to used to make hair conditioner
    3) In what % is used to make a stable emulsion

    Thanks

    Carbomer isn’t an emulsifier I’m afraid.

    I’d pair cetearth-20 with another emulsifier such as glyceryl stearate. How much to use of each? See: http://www.makingskincare.com/hlb-calculator/

    Yes, it really depends on the type of oils you are using too.

    Cetyl alcohol
    liquid parafin

    For more stable, glyceryl stearate citrate 2%
    ceteareth 20 2.75%
    both combined provide high tolerance % oil phase.
    i like glyceryl stearate citrate because of its fragrance, emollient, emulsifier,

    @luiscuevasii, you can use ceteareth 20 as an emulsifier for a conditioner. It’s non-ionic, and compatible with cationic ingredients. However, you might not like the draggy feel of stearic acid. Consider cetearyl alcohol instead. I would replace mineral oil  by silicones. And please post full formula with percentages.

    @Dtdang
    This is a very old thread. Big chance the problem has been resolved in the mean time.
