  • Brand owners and formulators - catapult your brand onto the global market

How an insignificant event can catapult your brand onto the global market.

From nothing, in 2006, I co-founded two skincare manufacturing factories, which ran until 2024. At our Penang Island (Malaysia) factory, we were asked to produce hotel amenities for the Eastern & Oriental Hotel—known simply as the ‘E&O’, yes, the Grande Dame of George Town, Penang Island.

Since 1885, the E&O passageways have been graced by the rich and privileged from the Western world. Today, the E&O continues to shine as a testament to the grand elegance of the British colonial era. Indeed, life’s genuine pleasures never go out of fashion.

And this elegance included my artisan-crafted room amenities. Shortly after I started to supply to the E&O, I was receiving messages from guests returning home to the US, UK, and other countries wanting to know where they could buy my skincare.

Then a number of global brands asked me to Private Label their brand. So, in a very short time, 90% of our turnover was producing skincare for these global brands.

So, my main takeaway? What appears to be an insignificant event can catapult you to very significant impacts on growth and turnover.

Those are beautiful, I actually wanted to approach hotels for branded amenities. My samples are packaged beautifully so I could sell a sampler package on Etsy, but then I realized they were nice enough for hotel rooms. The benefit is the travelers. You might not be popular in one area but there’s always a market somewhere.

Thanks for your very kind words.

The key to success with hotel amenities is your production facility and production capacity. I was exporting hotel amenities globally, so my products needed to be compliant with global cosmetic compliance standards. These standards need to be in place before you approach hotels. These businesses care about their guests and certainly don’t want to be caught out.

And hotels will order large quantities to maintain their stock on hand. That’s why production capacity is important.

You also need design and production capacity in product labels. I outsourced this work, but you need to have companies producing labels that are reliable.

It’s a long-term project. I started in 2006 when I had Indochine Natural in Malaysia and Viet Nam.
