In customer tests, I’ve found that tea tree oil appears to be an effective anti-dandruff agent at 0.1%, but even at that level the aroma is difficult to mask. Does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives / complements with antibacterial/antifungal activity? (Please don’t suggest zinc pyrithione, the whole idea is to get away from that stuff and have an effective, kinder, alternative to the horrible Head and Shoulders.

Yes, Belassi … you might try Clary Sage Oil.  While it will not mask the odor of Tea Tree Oil, the combination of Tea Tree and Clary Sage yields a nice woodsy, earthy aroma (my clients love it) and the Clary Sage will provide some benefits.

Thanks for that, Mark. I’ll look into getting some immediately after the holiday. I was thinking of also trying say 0.5% monolaurin, although that will require going to a hot initial mix. It’s going to take a lot of testing. I think I will have to see if I can recruit a test panel somehow. The problem is once you fix their problem, they are no longer on the test panel (sigh)

    Hi Belassi,

I am Alamgir, newly joint in this forum i have been working as a R & D chemist in a newly start company in Dubai, i have seen your discussion on anti dandruff agent with Mark hence i would like to say why don’t you use climbazole, if you are not interested in zinc pyrithion.

@ belassi what is so horrible with zink pyrithione?

@alam: Thanks for the idea, but it’s not available in my market.

@David: Can’t make a clear with that, besides which, Head and Shoulders uses it, and I despise that product. H&S is cleverly formulated (in my opinion) to cause irritation (because of its use of SLS) which is then “cured” by the active ingredients. Good marketing but terrible for the consumer.
