I see limited benefit in getting patents on cosmetic formulas.  You’ll get much more return on your investment by spending that money on good marketing.

Yes, it will settle out of solution if it’s not in the proper formulation or the particles are too large.  And @Chirag is right typically EGMS is what you use for the pearling effect.

Well, the object of a shampoo is to clean all the oil and dirt off your hair.  Hair that is nice conditioned typically has oils, emollients and humectants in it.  Essentially, it is very difficult to remove everything bad and put something good back on.

The best technology for this is the Pantene shampoo and they use Dimethicone for the conditioning effect.  Other shampoo formulas can moisturize too but nothing beats the combination of a shampoo then a rinse out conditioner.

Is there an example of a product on the market that already works the way you are describing?

Agreed.  If they are heat stable then adding sooner rather than later is preferred as it gives more time to get thoroughly mixed in the formula.

I’m wondering about the activity level of your SLS.

If you are using 16% of a 28% solution your detergent level is actually 4.8%, probably too low.  I would say the minimum anionic surfactant in a shampoo would be 8%

I think there would be a market for this.  But I think you’d need to build your client list via a website.  And you may have to limit to US only clients due to shipping issues.

Yes, it’s safe.  To find reliable safety information about cosmetic ingredients the CIR is the place to go.

I’m not sure there is a thing that would act and feel like petrolatum but be water soluble.

    Thanks @iaskedbetter!

Really, our Practical Cosmetic Formulating course is a great place to start.  However, it gives information on all types of cosmetic formulating, not just hair.
You can find out more information here.

I don’t think you can make a general conclusion about tattoos.  If your boss (or future boss) has a negative attitude about tattoos it will likely hinder your career.  If your boss doesn’t care then it won’t.

But I don’t think it will ever make you unhireable.  I personally have no problem with them.

May 1, 2015 at 5:24 pm in reply to: Should aloe vera be banned?

@Giggles - I don’t think that Aloe in cosmetics represents any kind of danger to consumers.  But the position paper of “Big Aloe” sounds exactly like the kind of report that so called “toxic chemical pushers” would put out.

My point in posting the story here is to highlight how silly it is to use the precautionary principle to regulate chemicals and how hypocritical groups that call for it are when it comes to “natural” ingredients.  A similar thing is happening with Lavender.
Natural does not equal safe and synthetic does not equal unsafe.
There is just safe ingredients and unsafe ingredients.  We should have a common standard for all ingredients.

Can you give us the full ingredient list?  Do you have something in the formula that works as a suspending agent?

I won’t be making it this year.  I will be attending the AOCS meeting in Orlando starting this Sunday however.

I’m also attending the C&T Summit in Philadelphia in June.

Precautionary Principle would call for a ban until it is “proven” harmless.

April 25, 2015 at 10:38 pm in reply to: What can I use to make volumizing spray?

@AuroraBorealis - In our natural formulating course we use the following to describe types of natural formulating.

    Tier 4 - Greenwashing
Tier 3 - Following a natural standard (like COSMOS or the Whole Foods list)
Tier 2 - Following the USDA organic standard
Tier 1 - Directly from nature (e.g. coconut oil)
    Hope that helps.

I’ve always found Laboratories Serobiologique fascinating.  They make the wildest claims that couldn’t possibly be used in cosmetic marketing but I do appreciate their efforts.

It would help if we knew what type of formula you were making and what other ingredients were in it.
