    @Perry it hasn’t been too bad recently. More and more people seem to be upvoting scientifically sound answers. With that being said, the “natural is best” and “CIR is evil and everything is corrupt” crowds still seem to be quite prominent. These kinds of groups can truly make answering a simple question a huge chore.

    @Perry it’s funny that you mention stylists because on the r/HaircareScience subreddit there were tons of hairstylists defending Olaplex.

    @Perry Interesting. Marketing hype would be my first guess as well. It seems that they’ve managed to amass a cult following who see their products as the holy grail.

    @Cafe33 @Perry Thanks! When I read 2% my spidey sense went off. I’m glad I checked.

    @Graillotion I just realized that I tagged Pharm instead of you in my above comments. Sorry!

    @Pharma What a ridiculous question.

    All I need is salt, water, and citric acid. Just mix salt and water in a 1:2 ratio and then adjust the pH to 2. No problem.

    Just realized I went outside of the pH range. Woopsie.

    @Pharma I’m mostly interested out of sheer curiosity rather than wanting to use the study for practical use but thanks for the information nonetheless.

    @Agate
    I’ve never heard of triethyl citrate before but I’ll look into it. Thanks for the suggestion.

    @ketchito
    Thanks for the info on zinc ricinoleate. I might scrounge around for some studies to see if I can find anything more.

    Thanks @ozgirl

    I’ll take a look at the formulas in the personal care mag and then go from there.

    @ngarayeva001
    I keep seeing that ingredient in online formulas and it has peeked my interest.

    I would also be curious to know if anyone has had any good experiences with zinc ricinoleate?

    Thanks @ketchito , that’s kind of what I’ve been figuring.

    I suppose I’ll just have to get a bunch of ingredients together and start trying stuff. There must be some combination of ingredients out there that does not irritate my skin.

    The problem here is that your waxes have very high melting points. This means that by the time you get to your desired temperature range of 45-50c, your product is basically already solid.

    To solve this, you could dramatically decrease the % of wax in your formula or try using different waces with lower melting points.

    You’ll need an emulsifier. Luckily, since you’re formulating a shampoo which uses surfactants (emulsifiers) to clean the hair and scalp, you should be able to incorporate the lanolin. Just make sure to heat your phases before mixing.

    Bill’s comment reminded me about an ointment I have sitting around that I have found awesome for eczema. It is called Eucerin Aquaphor multipurpose healing ointment.

    https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.amazon.ca/AQUAPHOR-Multipurpose-Healing-Ointment-tube/dp/B00BO0AYLU&ved=2ahUKEwjzppnlmebqAhVFJTQIHRnPAsEQFjAAegQIBhAB&usg=AOvVaw1KpHK-B-3iP-OSQb714-Y6

    There it is on amazon.

    It is very greasy and heavy but if your son wants to apply it to his most painful spots only, that could help.

    I thought you could list synthetic fragrances as “fragrance”. I could be wrong though.

    I understand that you want to avoid parabens, but as someone with pretty harsh eczema, they are probably my favourite preservative. In my case, I have had bad reactions with other preservatives but parabens have always worked really well with my skin.

    Your son may have similar results if you’re willing to give the paraben-containing products a chance.

    I see a lot of people suggesting that you use cetearyl alcohol, and while I agree that it is a good choice, I personally have never seen any benefit of using it over cetyl alcohol alone.

    If cetyl alcohol is cheaper or more widely available in your region, then you may want to just go with that.

    Technically speaking, you don’t need either of those to make hand sanitizer. Those are just additions to create a gel-like consistency.

    You could try using sepimax zen, or any other gel-type thickener.

    Thinking about it, that would make sense.

    While I agree with @Belassi that you can make your own ethanol using a still, I think I should add that you should always check the laws on distilling alcohol in your country/region first.

    Here in British Columbia, it is illegal to distill alcohol without a license, even if you don’t plan on selling it. I do believe that this law was passed when a bunch of people died from the methanol that was present in their homemade alcohol.

    Here in Canada SLES is also pretty cheap, but so is Olefin sulphonate.

    I find SLES to be the better of the two, if only by a thin margin. For a business, SLES would be the better choice because in bulk, it is way cheaper than most of the other surfactants on the market.

    To give you proper help, we would need your full formula. Otherwise, we can’t really help.

    I know that @Belassi has done some testing/research into using coffee in formulation. Not so sure about caffeine.

    I would say that it is mostly a marketing ingredient. If you want to add it to your formula, I would just use coffee.

    Depends on what you’re going for. Anywhere between 0.1%-10% is usually used.

    I would probably add a silicone or mineral oil to this before worrying about shea butter. As it stands, I cant imagine that this cream would do much good for eczema (coming from a guy with severe eczema).
