Thank you so much! This was most insightful and gives me the direction I need to move forward. Yes, I was wondering if there were certain principles behind that formulators generally follow and that I might be unaware of, particularly with increasing emulsifier amounts because I see each emulsifier has different ranges of use and some of them reach up to 10%. Yet, I hear some people tell me that I shouldn’t exceed 6% in my formulation but never detailed the thoughts behind the statement. My actual background is elsewhere and I am learning everything from scratch, and while I read a lot there are nuances here and there that I suppose only comes with experience. Thanks again, much appreciated.

aww ya, I can see where you’re coming from. It’s a commercial sample, and I’m not sure how much of the formula I can put out here in a public domain, hence my hesitation. However, I am very grateful for your guidance and reply and thank you for this. The key thing that I realised from here is that it’s multifactorial. When you say formula bones, how much details should be included here? To make it helpful for seeking troubleshooting help. I’d like to get an idea for future.

Thanks so much for replying! I have about 19% total oil load in my face cream, and currently using a total of 6% total emulsifier (a blend of two emulsifiers, which totals up to 6%). and I have also added in carbomer, and this is going into stability testing (freeze thaw, AT and RT). If this combo fails, I am wondering if it’s worthwhile to increase total emulsifier amounts to 7% and beyond and whether there is some kind of cap about how much total emulsifiers can be added to a face cream. At what point, do I stop increasing emulsifier amounts and decide that the issue is the kind of emulsifier used instead? (just an aside note, I am also on the side testing different kinds of emulsifiers, but would like to understand better to help me streamline this process more). Hopefully this helps to clarify my query. Sincerest thanks again for helping me!

Thank you! I have butylene glycol in my formulation, but only at 1%. I tried to make the slurry. My steps were….measured out the xanthan gum into a beaker, added the butylene glycol to it, mixed it with a spatula to form the slurry (it turned out very thick and because of the low amount of the butylene glycol, I wasn’t sure if it was well-dispersed or not). Then I measured in the water, and then started to heat and mix with stirring. The photo below shows the result after heating…it turned out quite goopy, which I suppose is expected, but I’m concerned I’m not doing it right because I have no idea what to expect. I observed some clumping, and also a lot of air bubbles. Am I doing the steps right? Is there any other info that I can help to provide to make the troubleshooting better please? What can I improve on? Sincerest thanks for the guidance!

I thought about this, but I have an impression that I read somewhere that to make an O/W emulsion the oil should be added to the water phase? Is it ok to do it the other way around and still make an O/W emulsion please? I am very inexperienced in formulating still and appreciate all the guidance I can get. Sincerest thanks for helping!

Thank you so much! And also for sharing the photo, which is very helpful! We have similar jars in the lab, and I am glad to know that these can be used. That will help to cut down waiting time for delivery for me.

Thank you so much! Just to clarify further, would this mean that I should then prepare more cream sample in the actual product packaging versus glass jars so that I have enough to do the various testing on it over time? Would you also do freeze-thaw stability testing on samples in the actual product packaging please? Is it advisable to open and close the same glass jar to retrieve sample for testing every time? or would it be better to treat it as like an aliquot where once you’ve opened it, it is removed from the pool of samples and then for the next testing you take the next aliquot? Someone told me it would be more representative of how face creams are used in real life to open and close the same jar, but at the same time I want to make sure I am collecting my data carefully and properly. Hopefully my question makes sense…I come from a molecular biology background originally, but have now ventured into personal care formulations and am doing my best to learn all this from scratch. Sorry for the newbie questions…I am sincerely grateful for all the guidance.

Thanks for sharing! Does it need to be in some kind of sterile chamber like a laminar flow while cooling overnight with the top off like that?

    Hi Gordof,

Thank you so much for the guidance! It’s a good idea to get them to test the same cream twice to see if we can get consistency too. 🙂

    Yours truly,

    Marianne

  • Thank you so much! I will try out these suggestions. Really appreciate your kind help.

Thanks so much for helping! Oh dear, I am not sure that we are able to handle ethyl ether. Does it have to be used to make liposomes? Or are there alternatives please?
