MemberJanuary 21, 2021 at 11:55 pm in reply to: How to define a water in oil emulsion? The percentage of water really has no impact upon determining if it is O/W or W/O. As @Bill_Toge quite correctly pointed out, you need to look at the emulsification system. -

MemberJanuary 21, 2021 at 2:30 pm in reply to: Re-using an HDPE squeeze bottle for lotionsI would say no, but I am always conservative. If you look at it from a risk versus benefit ratio, it is theoretically a source of contamination and bottles aren’t a huge expense in the big picture. -
If you follow the most recent Croda Guidance, in their reference, they discuss calculating an HLB. However, I will agree with Pharma in many respects. I used it a great deal more in OTC manufacturing in the past where PEG’s were common. It does give a starting point for your initial proposed emulsification system which you can then tweak at the bench.

You would have to include the whole Formula for any substantial help, but my guess is the L-Ascorbic Acid has oxidized. It can present as changes in color and/or odor. I would suggest using a more stable derivative.

Allantoin above 0.5% becomes OTC, not a Cosmetic. Trying to achieve greater than 0.5% requires a great deal of effort to solubilize in water itself.

Sodium Stearate if you are looking for a clear type deodorant bar. DuPont, Tate & Lyle has numerous starting Formulations. If you are thinking of a different type of product, you would really need to give more detail, such as the Formulation.

@Belassi Your posts have been handy. I was contacted by a Vet last week with some questions. They had a dog that had some HORRIBLE adverse reactions to an Oat Shampoo. Since there is less clarity in vet ingredient decks, the deck included “freshness preservers” as a claimed ingredient. I followed it up and it was MIT/MCT.

Can we keep in mind that this is a Technical Resource and we should probably communicate accordingly?

I have made this product but it most definitely is an OTC product.

MemberNovember 18, 2020 at 2:11 pm in reply to: Heat and Hold raw ingredients in emulsionsWe used “heat and hold” with older emulsifiers (non-ionic emulsifiers) to essentially get a more stable emulsion. The temperatures and pressures were NOT high enough to sterilize the water. The newer emulsifiers do not require this step in my experience.

It can also be an incredible laxative.

Interestingly enough, I have a colleague in Iowa whose home was just destroyed by a tornado. They call it a dericho. She is another Cosmetic Chemist. By the way, I really enjoy your posts on your teaching aids. We need more Science education at every level.

MemberSeptember 11, 2020 at 1:29 pm in reply to: Estimation of Water Activity in W/O emulsionsYes, I am. I am from a town about 35 miles south of Albany. Catskill New York and the NYS Thruway was 1/2 a mile behind my house. For more detailed information you may want to look closer at Phil Geis’s book (New Edition released) Cosmetic Microbiology: A Practical Approach, David Steinberg’s Book “Preservative for Cosmetics” or look for information in Food Science. In my experience, Aw has more use in that sector. -
