Beginning formulatorFebruary 28, 2025 at 1:11 pm in reply to: “Actives” in shampoo bars a waste?“A waste is relative” Are you doing it for marketing or actual benefit. The best way to know how if your active makes sense in a product is to do a little research on the active and how it actually functions. The more experience I gain the more I realize the stuff that does the actually heavy lifting in many products are the things with the long names we hate to add to our labels in fear of consumer disdain. Actives are awesome but vary so much. I love working with them but depending on what you are actually using, in shampoos, I’d say focus on the marketing benefits. I prefer actives in skincare and leave-ons.

Beginning formulatorNovember 19, 2024 at 3:31 pm in reply to: % of fragrance in after shave?Fragrance quantity is entirely based on preference and the IFRA recommendations for the fragrance you have chosen. For aftershave I would go easy on the fragrance since it will be used on the face and so close to the nose. I rarely use more than 0.3% - 1% in products I formulate. That may differ for you based on what you desire.

Will do. Thanks and congratulations.

Beginning formulatorDecember 13, 2023 at 9:02 am in reply to: Where to find high sheer mixers for 10 gal batches? You didn’t put the amount of oils so i’m guessing around 30% -36% or so. You also missed your preservative and antioxidant. I am not much of a butter formulator but i think its your formula that needs adjusting and that could be a bunch of different things. I would keep the oils under 15% and you may also need a gum/polymer as well. I’d say start with making a 1 gallon batch again, go over your numbers and ensure everything adds up correctly before scaling. You can also check out knowde for a base formula and work your way from there.

I will either way but just asking to know where to start with
preservatives. People on here are very knowledgeable and instead of
wasting material with preservatives that will not work or destabilize
the formula I ask for guidance. -
Phil, thank you for responding. The active meaning since I was intending to only use 3% peroxide as 33% of the formula it would get diluted down to be approx 1% which is the standard amount in most hospital grade cleaners. Manufacturers challenge test showed the following for the Alkyl. I noticed none of their base formulas used preservatives either.

Beginning formulatorNovember 19, 2024 at 7:26 pm in reply to: Recommendation for cosmetic suppliersI asked because there are many available if you check google. You should also try attending Cosmoprof if you want to find those that do custom packaging. One of my go to’s is Container and Packaging. If you call them directly and are doing pallets you get better rates than the website. You can also try US Pack Group for bottles.
