what I meant to say it´s if there is a chance of water contamination, but the pH of the water in the shower is  neutral. Why would an antifungal work if they are too pH acidic dependent… It’s something that I don’t fully understand.

I am sorry for not explaining myself better, I was also talking about David C. Steinberg, but I just remembered his last name as Spielberg.

It makes totally sense to me to add a preservative to  an anhydrous scrub if there is chance water gets in i, but at the same time I was not sure antifungals were going to work since they are too acidic pH dependant and the pH of the shower is neutral.

On the other hand I read somewhere Spielberg saying that over-preservation is a current problem in cosmetic formulation. I guess everybody tries to play it safe, but what’s so bad about over-preservation?  It’s because microbes might develop resistances or a health issue for consumers?

Thanks for the info I am learning a lot here. I have made the scrub just with sugar, butters, oils and btms (no water content) and I have added phenoxy/ EHG.

@chemicalmatt thanks for replying. I read that glycerine can be used as preservative if used in a high quantity but in the sephora scrubs is not as clear…
On the other hand, I see that Sephora has a strict formulation policy. Not the best site for starters to look into.

@PhilGeis is it 1% of Cosgard 221 too much in the hair cream you mean? What I would like to know is  if that’s enough for a good preservative system being pH 5 and 0’1% edta.

I have  relaxed my hair for almost 20 years, two times per year. This year I decided to go natural and not use them anymore. I just decided to embrace my afro hair texture, my scalp is happier, no more burns…

I would like to know as well. I am working on a hair cream pH 5. I am using benzyl alcohol and dehydroacetic 1%. Is that enough for an effective preservative system? I have seen in the market other hair creams with only Cosgard as Preservative.
Ingredients are  aqua, mango butter, sweet almond oil,  lactic acid, aloe vera and BTMS.

Shall I add a bit of phenoxyethanol  and EDTA to boost the system or just leave it like that? What %?

    Thanks in advance

@Abdullah @Paprik @ketchito . Hi guys, I have tried Cosgard 221 at 1% and it smells too strong. I am gonna change the preservant. I have looked into Optiphen plus and Euxyl PE9010, but they are expensive and not water soluble per se.

What do you think about using in my hair mist….
    sodium benzoate/potasium sorbate at 1%
    phenoxyethanol at 0.5%
    disodium EDTA 0,1%
    water
    honeyquat
    panthenol
    fragance
ph adjuster q.s to pH 5?

    Thanks in advance,

any help is much appreciate it

@ketchito I am interested in gently opening the cuticles so that t low porosity hair, 4c afro hair absorbes better the moisture. Then the hydrating mist is followed with a cream with a balanced pH and oil. My goal is that my mist has a pH between 5 or 6 if possible.

Thank you guys for your feedback @Abdullah @Paprik. I would like the hair mist to have the highest pH possible so that it has a cuticle opening effect on low porosity hair.  Small quantities of Cosgard 221 blends well with my fragrance. I am afraid at 1% the mist is gonna smell awful.

Let’s say that I swift to Phenoxyethanol and Ethylglycerine  and I add EDTA as well, what other preservative do you suggest.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Abdullah thanks for replying back.  I am using Cosgard 221 at  0.4%. What antifungal preservative can I add? I would like to keep this preservative because it has an aroma that blends well with my fragrance.
