From a consumer and self-study:  this is the best about being here….what I learn from the industry, which is what prompted me to start this journey.  I was a Dermalogica slave for about 15 years.  And then Skinceuticals hit the market.  And I had to make my own L-ascorbic serum as the prices were ludicrous.  The Ordinary changed everything:  Brandon (bless his cotton socks) was a groundbreaker to my mind.  And here we have little dropper bottles of minimal materials.  And it worked!

Listening to the chemists, realising that marketing drives the industry, all the BS on the labels and promo materials.  And I felt deceived and cheated that I was a slave to this rubbish for so many years.
I still go read labels at the stores and the ingredient lists are still long.  And its tempting to fall trap to it.
So my uneducated approach now is that I’ll add materials for stability & sensory, staples like glycerin and as for actives less is more.  And I don’t waste money on mysterious extracts.
Oh and I hate the word “soothing” now….the default claim for botanicals if all else fails….

@Pharma interesting, I shall experiment more.

Abandoning oils now. My other experiments excluding glycerine, dissolved clear on day 6. Now increasing ratios.

I’ve just spent hours this week testing SA solubility in many solvents….butylene glycol, propanediol, castor oil, glycerine, sodium lactate.  Heat, no heat, high shear, hand mixing…. I’ve eventually managed to scrape together a 2% SA in my formulation with sodium lactate probably the best performing although none dissolved 100%.

Could you please share with me what the oil to SA ratio is and will any oil work?  Didn’t have that much luck with castor oil.

Which is better:  butylene glycol or propylene?  I see formulations call for propylene and seldom butylene and despite my research can’t understand why

There’s a product on the market marketed as a cleansing oil, but which is clearly not a true oil neither does it contain any lipids. It looks and feels like an oil due to a very high % of glycerin. On application and rub in, it presents with micro foaming but doesn’t turn into a runny low viscosity milky solution. It washes off with excellent after wash skin feel. I suspect half the appeal is that “magic” of an oil that can foam ever so slightly and rinse off so easily with non-drying and softening after feel. Examples: Xemose Cleansing Oil, La Roche-Posay Lipikar Cleansing Oil

I suspect the OP is trying to create a similar product (I’ve been struggling for weeks to thicken a similar formulation with the limited ingredients I have access to).

From a fellow-rookie: maybe an idea to remove the actives and stabilise the base-formula first. Saves you money and helps to isolate the problem.
