I will try to speak to a representative next week. -

Professional Chemist / FormulatorMay 26, 2015 at 1:58 am in reply to: Glycol distearete issue in surfactant systemMy viscosity is 3,100 cps LV4@60rpm … so EGDS will settle if not enough viscosity ? … I’ll make a batch with no salt adjustment and see how fast it settles compared to the adjusted one.
My final pH is 5.5 -

Professional Chemist / FormulatorMay 24, 2015 at 12:36 am in reply to: Glycol distearete issue in surfactant system@Bill_Toge I’m actually seeing a lot of sedimentation- almost like 1/4 of the jar at the bottom is a waxy pearlized concentrate…based on your insights, I’m thinking it’s not EGDS that settled, but the other surfactants…can that be possible? and why would it look pearlized? is it just like when you use too much stearic acid in a shave cream up to a point that it looks pearlized?
@Perry What do you mean by proper formulation? -

I’m not trying to make a deo, instead I remember trying to duplicate a clear gel that’s in the market and sold in a tube…I was never able to duplicate it by following the IL (see below)
Water, Stearic Acid, Propanediol, Sodium Stearate, Glycerin, Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate,Xanthan Gum, Capric Caprylic Triglyceride, Phenoxyethanol -

@bobzchemis I was thinking the same at first but from what I’m seeing, bentonite has Fe impurities so I’m not sure if I would need to end up removing bentonite from my formulaI will make 2 more batches, one with chelating agent and one replacing bentonite and will let you guys know the outcomeThanks a lot! -

Professional Chemist / FormulatorJune 2, 2014 at 7:09 pm in reply to: surfactant system turns hazy after salt additionIf this lot# of CAPB had more salt than the previous ones, shouldn’t I’ve had to add less salt than before? What happened was the opposite, I had to add much more salt to get the viscosity I wanted. What could’ve been the real cause of haziness and low viscosity?

Professional Chemist / FormulatorJune 2, 2014 at 7:05 pm in reply to: surfactant system turns hazy after salt additionAfter doing some experiments, it was CAPB the one to blame. I used several samples I kept from previous lots and my shower gel came clear and viscous. The CoA’s all look the same though….I wouldn’t have known it could cause an issue by just reading at the specifications like % salt, etc.

Professional Chemist / FormulatorMay 8, 2014 at 7:27 pm in reply to: Lotion Whitening on Rub In - Possible Sources and Preventions?I’ve never heard about increasing cetyl alcohol to reduce whitening, thanks chemicalmatt!, I will definitely try it in a formula I’m working on. It’s a “natural” formula with no PEG emulsifiers and no silicones. For this reason, I’ve been looking around for ways of solving this issue.
So far I’ve found raw materials that claim to help address the soaping effect. Some examples are silicone replacements like Softolive from Soliance and Olive LD SP from Clariant. I’ve tried changing my emulsifier with Simulgreen from Seppic. I’ve even tried replacing waxes like stearyl alcohol and stearic acid with things like Cutina HVG from BASF and Compritol 888 from Gattefosse…but nothing has worked so far! What has worked so far is adding 1% dimethicone, but unfortunately I can’t include it in my formula.I found an interesting article from BASF explaining that the soaping effect is due to friction foam?? but still I haven’t been able to fully understand why this happens. -

Professional Chemist / FormulatorApril 29, 2014 at 7:04 pm in reply to: French Clay Masks@chemicalmatt I’m having stability issues with my clay mask and after comparing samples before and after adding preservative, I can definitely say it’s the preservative that is causing it.
My mask is actually an emulsion (I’m also against the idea of having oils in the mask, but that’s what our customer wanted) with kaolin and MgAl Silicate. I’m adding phenoxyethanol at the end of the process. Is there a reason why adding it at the beginning would make a difference- more stable? -
The only issue I had with this raw was that it was giving a weird odor to my final product…haven’t used it since then

Professional Chemist / FormulatorFebruary 8, 2014 at 11:27 pm in reply to: solubilizing salicylic acid in propanediolCan anybody recommend me where to read about solubility of s.acid?
From what I’m seeing in sample formulas, I’d like to know why surfactants like C14-C16 olefin sulfonate and ethoxylates are used to aid in solubilizing s.acid. -
I just found out Earth Supplied has ESP Mango Grit 20-40 and ESP Mango Grit 40-80 with INCI name Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed.
I’ve requested samples and will let you guys know how they look like when I receive them
