    You have a pretty simple
    formula so it would be easy to to a knockout experiment. That should tell you what the problem ingredient is, and from there you can either decrease it or replace it entirely.

    Thank you, I will try these suggestions.

    personally I don’t have a problem with phenoxyethanol other than its smell, which is really not that bad just kinda strong sometimes, certainly not the worst as far as preservatives go (Tristat ECO is awful). But sometimes I dont want to have any fragrance at all, just letting the smell of my oils, butters, and hydrosols come through as much as possible. Plus I just want to experiment with different preservation methods. I see a lot of products preserved with some combination of sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, glycols, etc. so I am trying that out.

    The instructions also said to homogenize both phases separately before combining them, is that really necessary?

    Maybe try using less Niacinamide?

    @MarkBroussard
    Thanks for the tips I will try that out.

    My main reason for not using phenoxyethanol in this formula is that some people may have a reaction to it, either a real physical one on their face or an emotional reaction to the word itself. But if sodium benzoate can also cause flushing than maybe i’m not any better off with that.

    Euxyl 9010 + sodium phytate is my go to preservative for pretty much everything, I’m just trying to see if I can get away with using anything else. My normal suppliers don’t seem to carry phenethyl alcohol but I’ll keep looking.

    Is GLDA compatible with cationics?

    Do you mean that EHG is not effective if it’s not used with phenoxyethanol?

    this is for an emulsified serum.

    All four together!

  • @ketchito good idea I will try to buy this product and test it out myself.

    @Abdullah it would
    make for a pretty terrible product if the only
    surfactant above 1% is decyl glucoside, but you never know! How are you accomplishing the pearl effect without a pearlizer?

    Sorry for not clarifying the question. The suppliers I am looking at call for a ph of “about 6” in order to avoid the niacinamide turning into nicotinic acid, an irritant. I am using it at 4% and I am wondering if a ph of 5 is too low or or not. From the other replies it’s looking like it will be fine.

    @Perry thanks for that info!

    @Perry that all makes sense to me. But what about absorbing through your skin? If everything else in the product you’re applying is meant to be absorbed for some benefit or another, wouldn’t the polymer also be absorbed? And what are the possible consequences of this synthetic plastic material entering the body and the bloodstream? To me that would be the bigger concern.

    @Ilsme what do you say to them to convince them that they are not micro plastic? And if they aren’t micro plastics….what are they?

    No, nothing that small, 100-200 ml at minimum

    Thanks for the input guys im going to try some of this stuff out. I’ll start with making a batch without it and seeing what happens, but im fairly confident the addition of tocopherol + not letting light hit the product will fix it.

    @FlawlessTouch i have not checked the ph thats a good idea ill give that a shot. Which exact odor masking agent do you use? Does it get rid of all smell completely or just tamp it down a bit? What do you use as a ph buffer?

    Ive noticed that citric acid can lower the viscosity of emulsions made with some seppic polymers, would lactic acid also do this?

    The other issue im having with my blue tansy oil is that even at tiny amounts the smell is way too strong. I still want the cream to end up slightly blue but i cant do that without it being overpowered by the tansy smell. An ideal blue tansy oil would be one that is just as blue but not as aromatic. I will try ordering some from new directions and see if it works better for me.

    @Graillotion Well until yesterday I was being a fool and had been storing it in a clear plastic bottle as well using the wrong tocopherol! But I realized my mistake and made a new test batch, and this time I’m storing it in a dark cabinet and also switched out tocopherol acetate for tocopherol. I am using the 95% one that lotion crafter sells at 0.25%. So hopefully these changes will make a difference, but the tocopherol is about the extent of my AntiOx program, is there anything else I can be doing?

    The oil is from plant therapy.

    Ok good to know. So other than those differences mentioned neither one is better/worse for stability of the emulsion?

  • @Camel how do humectants like glycerin and propanediol help with preservation? Not doubting you I just honestly dont know.

    I can’t recall ever using a fragrance  that won’t dissolve in either Polysorbate 20 or 80. Sometimes I get lucky and the FOs dissolve directly into my surfactants alone, in which case I will do that first and then proceed with   the formula. The polysorbates actually thicken one formula I have, but on all other occasions resulted in a lower viscosity. You may have to just compensate by using some kind of thickener, or more salt if possible. I can’t use sulfates or PEGs but like Camel said above I hear the Castor oil one is very good.

    I was actually able to find some here today at a craft store that is white and says “99% pure, meets food chemical codex specifications”. Not sure if that’s legit?

    I use 5% SCI. Total formula has 31% surfactants including the SCI. Don’t ask me what the solids % is that I do not know.

    I would also like to know what @Perry or any one else thinks about this. I did not know about its potential to lose activity over time.
