as Sil said, what is natural preservative?

I made a lotion with phenoxyethanol and caprylyl Glycol which is like this preservative blend 9:1. I was after some time it was producing gas. Perry said yeast contamination can produce gas so i added 0.1% caprylhydroxamic acid to see what happens and now it doesn’t produce gas. So maybe these products are also contaminated. The don’t have chelating agent and citric acid so the pH may also be high.

For eczema, any product with petrolatum and glycerin as first two ingredients after water is a good product.

This is what she said regarding the use of  citric acid & chelating agent “Usually we don’t use EDTA in cream. Triethanolamine used to adjust pH for (non natural) cream based. Natural cream based not required any pH adjuster (because it’s already between 5-6)..”

    What do you think?

I asked the manufacturer, they use Pentylene Glycol, Caprylyl Glycol & Ethylhexylglycerin for natural preservative.

Will ask about chelating agent & citric acid  :)

  • @chemicalmatt, I’ve improvised the formula but I’ve encountered these
    problems:

1.Upon mixing water phase & oil phase, the oil
phase becomes hardened into lump. Why?

2.The end products has little bubbles and won’t go
away after many days. How can I remove these bubbles?

  • @singhc10, I tested it with lower amount of polysorbate but the oils separated after a while. I didn’t know that it would extract lipid out of skin. Thanks @singhc10, I will try with only 0.1% oils and reduce the percentage of coco glucoside and I will compare the result (with oils & without oils).

  • I agree with you @Perry. I should use oils/moisturizer after shower but I’m kind of lazy person to put many things on my skin. So I think it is good if I could get the benefits from natural oils while showering.

  • Thanks @jemolian. I will try cut all the oils out and test it on my skin. But, why should I reduce the amount of glycerin? I thought having high amount of glycerin and sodium PCA could help lock in skin’s natural moisture and prevent over-drying because they are humectants.

  • @jemolian, are the oils not helping at all? I want to add some oil in body wash for treating my eczema. Could you please suggest the amount of surfactants should I use.

    Hi @ozgirl

I’ve tested it a couple of times and seems ok so far, because my skin is not flaky anymore.

The final pH is 6. I tried with olive oil, but the final product did not thicken and became even more cloudy. Hence, why I changed to Olive soap base.

And as for fragrance, I used something called Body Fragrance Oil which is actually to make EDP but without the alcohol (one of Chanel’s fragrance imitation smell) because I love that smell so much. Should I change with essential oil instead?

    Hello @czkld & @alchemist01

I’m thinking of replacing it with essential oil  :) I just happen to love the current smell though because it’s similar to my favorite perfume.

I tried changing to all glycerin, but the effect of olive base is so much better on my skin.

    Hi @Belassi

Previously I used lavender + grapefruit fragrance oils with olive soap base (& citric acid). It did turn rancid after a couple of weeks. Then I tried changing it to Body Fragrance Oil, it is ok now even after 3 months. Do you think it could start smelling after a few more months?

FYI, the current pH is already 6. I use ps20 because I thought it could make the shower gel look more clear by solubilizing fragrance oil better in the formulation (and to avoid the rancid smell too?)

    ====

    All in all,

    1. How can I substitute Olive soap base with olive oil and still be able to have clear shower gel? - I tried olive oil + ps20 but did not work. It turned very cloudy and watery even with the same amount of acrylates, and it became two layers  :'( I mean I really like the effect of olive oil on my skin  :)

    2. Is this formulation acceptable for shampoo too?

Thank you for all your help! Stay safe everyone!

Thank you for replying @Perry  :)

I have somewhat managed to lower the pH to 5.5 and increase its viscosity using the same ingredients, by slightly changing the sequence of addition (CAPB to the last).

    %
    1. Aqua 48.9
    2. Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate       1.0
    3. Coco Glucoside   2.0
    4. Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate   6.8
    5. Olive Oil Liquid Soap Base   9.8
    6. Fragrance Oil   2.0
    7. Citric Acid   0.2
    8. Cocamidopropyl Betaine 29.3

Although I have noticed, when I stir gently, the color is cloudy. But when I stir harder, it becomes very foamy and after a few hours when the foam is gone, it becomes crystal clear. Why is this?

Another thing, I can’t seem to make the smell retains stronger & lasting on skin after rinsing. But the smell during shower is so strong like typical commercial body wash. What can I add to improve this?

    Thank you.
