So is there any truth to phenoxyethanol being inactivated by polysorbates? I know this has been around for a while but I’ve never seen any data.

Preservatives for lip balms are a challenge. Very few available.

Do you have unreacted TEA prior to adding the SA?

Pumps will last longer than jars because there are no fingers to contaminate the product. So far, I haven’t seen anything beyond 18 months for expiration after opening.

We have lemongrass in some formulations and with 0.15 Rosamox never had a problem.

We want to use an organic one. The non-organic is totally deodorized, but the organic is stinky.

We had the same situation with a hair conditioner. Changed the formulation and it went away but were never able to figure out why. It wasn’t microbial.

We find that there is a strong cultural component to fragrance levels. Products made for Asian countries tend to have levels that most people in the U.S. find overpowering. On the other hand, many people in the U.S. love to see the fragrance-free claim, but then they don’t like the product because it doesn’t smell good. We like EOs, carefully selected as to properties and quality, and at <1%.

I’ve measured pH in soapy water before, but it would be interesting to compare a regular soap with a shampoo bar.

Has anybody measured the pH of a solid shampoo? It has to be a lot lower than regular soap, I think.

I don’t think you are writing rubbish at all. I’m just curious about what’s coming. When you get a chance please check Seppic’s Save Water formulation. No idea whether it works.

Thank you for all the input. Not very familiar with this area, but I see a number of formulations emerging that don’t contain soap, so I’m curious.

Yes, I can introduce a soap easily but many products are just too soapy.

Regarding anhydrous formulations and live bacteria, huge risk also. Remember that water condensation on the surface is common, and it would be all the bugs need to start growing.

I’m staying under 6. The question is what fungicide to supplement it with. From what I’ve seen sodium benzoate has minimal activity at this pH.

I thought that with sodium benzoate you have to formulate at a very low pH.

Check with DDW. They also have a regulatory department. BTW, turmeric is an ingredient that happens to have color, so it’s not listed as a colorant.

Any reason you want to use these FD&C dyes? We used to have Yellow 5 and 6 on some of our products but we replaced them by derivatives of turmeric with excellent results.

I think that your supplier has to be able to prove that batch-certified dyes were used in producing the suspension, but you are not subject to the requirement.

Perry: technically, you are right. From the marketing point of view, composition is the tail that wags the dog.
