PEG-12 Dimethicone comes to mind and being commonly used in window and glass sprays. But 8 hours??  Please check what chemicalmatt has suggested.

Acusol 880 or Acusol 882, Opulyns are generally styrene/acrylates based opacifiers and wouldn’t go with the cationic quats of the softener.

@Belassi what would you recommend then if not SLES as a high quality surfactant. You know blends are still not such a craze after all given the cost constraints.

Usman did you even go through the TDS of the product which clearly mentions 4-12 pH range depending on the formulation.

Check Aculyn 88, Aculyn Excel from Dow. I remember Aculyn 88 having suspension properties, but it all depends on the rest of the formulation and the size of the beads you want to suspend.

  • Add it to the water first, neutralise with citric acid solution to pH 4 and then add the remaining surfactants. Shouldn’t be any lumping then, I do it all the time without facing any issues.

Agree with @Bill_Toge, I have used HPMC though and it came out pretty nice. But comparatively still on lower side of viscosity. I tried Methocel 40-202, you can try 40-101 grade which has higher viscous.  But mine was alcohol free with either benzalkonium chloride or CHG.

Add a little base to neutralize the stearic acid and see if it gets any better. Or add a little ceteareth 20 which might help as well. In addition to all the above recommended suggestions.

That means your emulsifier isn’t doing the job to hold them together. Have you tried changing the emulsifier and see if it can hold the formula together. Maybe an emulsifier from silicone emulsions can help you here.

@Shubh123 I doubt of all those ingredients are compatible with the elastomer, there is a compatibility chart on Dowsil I suppose. Go through that to ascertain which one is showing incompatibility.

Yeah there are hydrotropes used in applications as mentioned by you @Aanchal. Where the active matter is pretty high and the solubility/clarity is difficult to achieve for longer periods. Cumene sulfonate/xylene sulfonate salts of sodium are the most commonly used one.

Please check regs in your country as it has been restricted for leave on products now in certain countries.

I have measured the pH of a soap based shower gel of a multinational company, it read 8.97. So it’s all as @Perry said what the sales brief or the customer demands without flouting the laws and regulations.

Check Aiglon and Kraton products for oil thickening. Many choices there.

I think @ngarayeva001 makes a very strong point here, can you not neutralize the carbomer before adding the oil phase. But that quantity is insanely high given the fact it’s a cream and it will become very thick to mix. Reduce to maybe to 0.25% and adjust the TEA accordingly.

Well I believe that an effective pH of around 8 will be optimum though it works in both the media. Rate of kill is higher at a higher pH compared to acidic pH. I generally use around 0.10% effectively and never had any issue.

Remove SLES, use a nonionic surfactant like a glucoside. Use chelants like EDTA or GLDA, check Akzo as well. They have Berols which are extremely effective in such applications. Acusol PRO from Dow as well is another versatile product. Dowanol solvents are also common in such products.
You cannot use SLES with a cationic quat for obvious reasons.

I have 18% solution of sodium hydroxide and if I do the proper weighing it will be probably 0.01% approximately. I don’t keep TEA in my lab generally, so it’s either that alkali solution or AMP-95 Ultra PC 2000.

Well then I guess you need to follow precisely what @ngarayeva001 suggested. It will just sit at the bottom and after absorbing water, it will become lumpy. Extra work then to make it homogenous.

Amit paraffin oil is the base for most of the oils in such cases and there is nothing wrong with it. I am not sure how you are basing  your observation, I have used this oil for last 20 years and had no issue at all no matter what the critics/pseudoscientific crowd had to comment.

@Gunther I just sprinkle PQ-10 in water and a very very low dosage of an alkali which immediately thickens the solution. It is clear as well; based on samples being churned out in the lab, can’t afford overnight and hourly waiting for wetting 🙂
