I would have thought that very intense green stuff that Bob is always talking about, should be good eh? chlorophyllin something or other.

Terrible, frankly. It kills cockroaches though.

There is no magic percentages in this kind of product. Notice that there is no preservative listed. This implies that the LOI is correct in that glycerine is the main ingredient. I suspect the oatmeal is soaked in water and of course the banana also contains water. Almonds are expensive so probably the almonds are below the 1% line as are all the rest of the ingredients.

Olive oil is a bad idea in any hair product because malessezia just loves it.

Not necessarily. The RLM-45CA requires neutralization. It could equally well be that the fatty acids are present as fatty acids. Measure the pH and let us know.

It’s a really excellent surfactant. Don’t need much of it because it is almost pure active.
In the LOI above, it looks a bit deceptive. I suspect that the lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic and etidronic are components of one or at most two oils. The KOH is used for saponifying that, but also for neutralising the RLM-45CA. Seems to be huge amount of sorbitol in it if we can believe the label.
Here is a similar recipe. -

I’m having a viscosity problem. Over time, it is becoming thinner. No other change noticed.

It’s a Kao product. Contains Akypo RLM45-CA.

Brushes and combs, I would go to China. If you’re careful, you can source what you need in good quality. We brought in some ingenious colour makeup boxes after first testing the quality. You can also find items such as pump brushes that can be filled with mineral makeup, very cute.

No, but I will check it out. Thanks for that. Yes, the concept of using Mexican natural ingredients is strong with us. We use mamey oil (better than Argan: a relative), aloes, tepexcohuite, and several other plant extracts.

Thanks Mark. I don’t have the financial reserves to finance the store for a year myself. I have quite a lot invested in the lab and raw materials / packaging. L’Occitane, interesting thought, it’s a local competitor. Lush in the UK make a lot of money from their stores. I notice that they are avoiding the USA though they are in Canada and - to my horror - I see they are beginning here in Mexico.

OK I am getting on with this. I am seeing an ex student of mine tomorrow who was involved in startup advice with the TEC, and I have contacted another ex student who is a high powered lawyer with commercial experience.
My main problem at the moment is estimating the financials since I have no retail experience to speak of. I need to estimate how much our first store will make in the first year.
Location: San Pedro, Nuevo Leon, Mexico (the most wealthy suburb in the whole of Latin America)
Type of store: similar to Lush; hand made soaps, but also very upmarket skin and hair care.So I downloaded and examined the Lush financial statements (latest 2014) and what I found was, that the LEAST profitable was their ONE store in Brazil. Now that store made sales of 70K (sterling pounds) last year.
Bearing in mind that Mexico’s economy is much stronger than Brazil’s, my question to the forum, is:
Do you think I should adopt this 70K pounds amount as projected sales for our year 1, when I talk to the Venture Capital company again? -
Dow Corning 2502 is specified for wound care, I will have to find some.

This is so nice that it is going to be a new product. I’ve finalised the percentage of licorice now. With the pearliser it has a lovely appearance, like metallic bronze. And it leaves the hair very shiny. The fragrance being natural tends to fade a bit, so I think I will add a little, maybe 0.2%, coffee fragrance oil to it.
-
It is supposed to be stable to 70C but I very much doubt that your melted oils etc are anywhere near as low as that. David is correct.

So the value of the company is based only on current earnings? I don’t take into account the 4 years of R&D time and materials, possible value of the brand and its support sites, anything like that?

Start point: 1.5% gum to 0.5% acid.
And please I would appreciate it very much if you would let me know the results since these types of systems are quite interesting to me. -
There are other types of emulsion systems beside the ones that are discussed all the time. Xanthan gum (or for that matter pectin and other polysachharides too) can make a very effective emulsion system when paired with small amounts of certain organic acids. I’d need to see the complete LOI to be sure. At any rate, gum used at a sufficient percentage will, just like carbomer, act as an emulsifier because it prevents the migration of polar from nonpolar.
You ask for a starting point. Well, first see if xanthan + salicylic acid + lipids is an emulsion system. Unfortunately I can’t give you a suggested ratio but you can find:United States Patent 119] Tezuka et a1.[11] 4,278,657 [45] Jul. 14, 1981[54] CREAMY OR MILKY SKIN COSMETIC COMPOSITIONS CONTAINING NATURAL MATERIALS AS EMULSIFYING AGENTS
