Resveratrol is NOT soluble in vegetable oils if that’s what you’re thinking of.
In my opinion it’s like adding powdered gold. That’s also insoluble and does nothing. Total waste of time ingredient.

UPS to Mexico is a complete and utter waste of time. Unless that is you have a freight forwarder at the border and are prepared to pay hundreds of dollars to clear it. Believe me, I have been through all this more than once. If you ship any chemical to Mexico via a courier such as UPS or DHL it WILL NOT get through the border.
If you ship it by POST it WILL almost certainly arrive without any trouble.

In that case use about 25% aloe vera.

Oh yes sorry I forgot the horrendous problems you have.
I’ve only done it at lab scale and it was a long time ago. I always ended up with salt content after neutralising the proton donor.

Do you have any idea at all what you’re doing? I wouldn’t attempt that myself, given that fragrances for household products are usually not very expensive. I’ve tried this myself in a school lab when I was teaching chemistry. I remember making wintergreen (methyl salicylate) it was pretty easy. But some fragrances require difficult-to-handle materials. Have you ever smelt butyric acid?

Not possible. “Softens and solidifies in summer.” Stop it doing that and you’ll be OK.

I don’t agree. I have seen the terrible damage done, I spent years in Africa where such products are peddled.

Well, I bought 2Kg of 98% purity glycyrrhizic acid and 4Kg of 12% (by acid content) root extract by post, and it’s been everything I expected. Physical and chemical performance precisely as specified. I did a solubility test and within my measurement accuracy of +/- 10% it complied. I converted it to the potassium salt using KOH by titration, and the average neutralisation point was as per stoichiometric calculation. (Using titration, the indicator doesn’t usually give a sudden change. You have to note the beginning and end of the change and take an average. It is the same with a pH meter, you need to know the pH value of the salt in solution. Traditional chemistry knowledge has been a boon to me in cosmetic chemistry.)
They first sent it DHL and I had insuperable problems with customs here. So I paid to send it back. They repackaged it for me in 1Kg packets and posted it, 2Kg each package. No problem, the postman brought them to the door.

Not on Alibaba. I do have one trusted supplier in China.

If you are from West Africa then you must be well aware of the enormous damage done by skin bleaching products. I am. Fela Kuti recorded an album about the problem, it is called “Yellow Fever“.

I know, it’s hard to get hold of. I bought mine from China via mail order. Everyone here in the post service seems to think it’s just fine for people to be ordering kilograms of white powder from China!

  • I just spent some time researching this idea of polyphenol intolerance. And what I found was, that all the science is in favour of these compounds. Phenolic acids and polyphenols, such as flavonoids, are the best studied natural substances known to possess an anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic potential. One example of many.
At the same time, I was unable to find a single reputable, believable source to the contrary. All those sites were quack remedy providers and the like.
Therefore I am not going to comment further.

We had good results using organic shea butter in a hand cream (noticeable after about three weeks use) presumably due to the vitamin A precursors. But that is no good for your application. You could try potassium glycyrrhizate (the soluble salt of the pure acid) - I make that sometimes by reacting the pure acid (from China of course) with potassium hydroxide. But, it is a salt and can be destabilised by various things including certain preservatives (eg dehydroacetic acid).
I agree about vitamin C, even the very expensive palmitate, Aprecier, oxidised in an airless container despite my best efforts and endless reading of patents.

Because we have already tried it, with far higher (twenty-fold) concentrations than what you are using. And it didn’t work.

You won’t see any skin lightening effect with that kind of licorice extract, at least I don’t think so.

That’s not a question I can answer. Designing shampoos, at least in my experience, is not that easy. There are many factors to consider, for instance thickening, sensorials, price of manufacture, appearance, cleansing strength, nature of foam, how the hair is after it dries… I think, overall, that designing skin formulae turned out to be easier than I had expected, but designing shampoos and conditioners, more difficult.

Each surfactant has its own properties profile so by mixing different types it is possible to produce the profile you want to achieve. For instance, sodium cocoamphoacetate is good for dense, small-bubble foam.

Yes, exactly. This is the way I teach my GMAT students to understand questions involving the calculation of mixtures.

It’s not a problem creating perfectly usable products. The problem comes with marketing them long term. For instance, launching a shampoo. You spend a lot of money giving out samples, doing advertising. But then after three months sales disappear.

The thing is, licorice is not very soluble. The pure acid is about 0.2% soluble. I buy a powdered root extract, direct from China. It is a yellow-brown powder with 12% of the licorice acid active ingredient and reasonably soluble because it also contains saponins. Frankly, any liquid licorice extract you buy is likely to contain a risible amount. I use 0.2% of the 12% powder in shampoo, and it is plenty.

At the moment, “anywhere you can actually find things in stock” seems good to me.

You can think about it like this:
If the supplied sanitizer is 80% ethanol, then 1 litre contains 800mL.
You want to add water to make a 30% solution.
A 30% solution means 300mL of ethanol and 700mL of water.
    (1) calculate the required amount of sanitizer to get 300mL of ethanol. You can see that 1mL of ethanol would be 1000mL (sanitizer) / 800, or 1.25mL.
    (2) You need 300mL of alcohol, so that is 300 x 1.25mL of sanitizer or 375mL of sanitizer. The rest is water, or 625mL. (for each litre of 30% alcohol v/v)

I would estimate my success rate at product creation to be not much better than one in ten.
