When a consumer has a problem that can be addressed by cosmetics, they will often go and buy products.  This is good for cosmetic chemists because it means more sales for your company and job security.

But many consumers would rather find some home made or DIY treatment to fix their problem.  I don't know why but DIY appeals to a lot of people.  It's useful for cosmetic chemists to see what consumers are attempting.  It may also give you some ideas for new products.
