  • Your Favorite Low HLB for W/O emulsions with high water content?

What are your favorite low HLB emulsifiers that are able to stabilize W/O emulsions with high water content? I’ve been interested in isostearyl glyceryl ether for a while but I’ve been unable to get it so I’m looking for a good substitution! Thank you

Best surfactant-emulsifiers for these high internal phase (HIP) invert emulsions are the polyglycol alkyl-modified silicone materials. Hands down the best. Check out ShinEtsu, Dowsil, Momentive, A&B Specialty for these.

Hi Matt! Thanks for the reply! I’m a bit worried because you mention surfactant emulsifiers but I’m looking for just emulsifiers as I’m looking to make a w/o cream with high water content as opposed to a cleanser with oil soluble ingredients?! I’m wondering if that doesn’t matter?

I will most definitely be checking them as still so thank you again but I just wanted to confirm:)

@Juliatrudie the term “surfactant” is synonymous with “emulsifier” in this and 99% of other cases, just to clarify. Not all surfactants are viable emulsifiers, but nearly all emulsifiers are surfactants.

Thanks for your question! I understand that you’re looking for emulsifiers to stabilize water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions with high water content. It’s essential to choose the right emulsifier for this specific formulation.

Regarding your interest in isostearyl glyceryl ether, if you’re having trouble sourcing it, you might want to consider alternative options. Have you explored other low HLB emulsifiers from reputable suppliers? Sometimes, there are similar emulsifiers available that can perform well in your formulation.

chemicalmatt mentioned surfactant-emulsifiers, and you rightly pointed out that you’re looking for emulsifiers without oil-soluble ingredients. Keep in mind that in many cases, the terms “surfactant” and “emulsifier” are used interchangeably. While not all surfactants are emulsifiers, most emulsifiers are indeed surfactants.

You can explore emulsifiers offered by companies like ShinEtsu, Dowsil, Momentive, and A&B Specialty. They might have options suitable for your high water content W/O cream. Feel free to inquire with them about specific products that match your requirements.

If you need more information about particular emulsifiers or have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. We’re here to help you find the perfect solution for your formulation needs!

    Best regards bruitly

What type of product are you making (example or benchmark) and what is water content?
