Which Dimethicone would give better performance
I was wondering as to what domethicone, 500, 12, regular dimethicone, etc would provide better performance in a hair conditioner for nice detangling and strand coating. I know 500 is the viscosity but im still fairly new at the hair products and I see ll different types of Dimethicone and was just wanting some input.

The higher viscosity dimethicone is better for hair products. It will work for body product as well. 12 is for face, as it has a lighter feel.

Perfect I have been using the 500 but it gets expensive. I have also used it with my other creams, etc for my face so i will order the 12 and it should help cut cost as i can use the 500 for hair and 12 for skin.. Thank you so much

I am actually using Dimethicone 1000 for hair conditioners. Works fine. Where are you located? I know a place that sells 1000 and cyclomethicone rather cheap in the UK (I have to order 12 from the US, and it’s much more expensive for me). By the way cylcomethicone is also great for hair. I usually mix them.

By the way talking about silicones, makingcosmetics sells a product called wrinkeblurr. It’s dimethicone crosspolymer and silica. Great for primers and moisturiser for “oily skin” (absorbs sebum).
Lotioncrafter sells the same dimethicone separately as a paste (if you don’t want silica’s absorbing effect). Consider trying it, if you can order from these suppliers.
Also, I don’t know if you know this source already, but check out INCI decoder. You can type in an INCI, it will give you a description of what it does in products, as well as a list of commercial products where it is used. Then you click on a product and it shows detailed LOI with a description of what every individual ingredient does. Folks, ngaryeva is right in that 1000cst dimethicone works well in hair care, and is more available right now. That is because the most commonly used dimethicones in skin-care are 200cst or 350cst, both being in short supply right now. If I had to choose only one MW for overall “standard” use, it would be the 350. I’d like other chemists to weigh in on that one someday, it would make for a good discussion here.

I have been thinking About ordering the wrinkle blur but i like making and mixing my own everything. The only Dimeth i have been able to find available is the 12 and 500 so i have the 500 and am wondering should i even purchase the 12? Any thoughts ??

Honestly, I have always reserved the higher visocoity Dimethicones for skin protectants under the US FDA OTC Monograph. I have found that the 100 cps or even lower are best for lubricity and shine.Not to complicate the issue, but there are haircare benefits that are achieved with the lower volatile silicones.
There are offsets for these products if there is limited availability. I have used and seen used the LexFeel series from Inoloex used widely. -

Oh, lucky you. I have to deal with the UK customs everytime I order something from makingcosmetics and lotioncrafter. I agree with your idea to have separate ingredients instead of blends like wrinkleblurr. I advise you to get Lotioncrafter EL61. It is totally worth it. It’s a dimethicone polymer in gel form. I made a primer with it yesterday and pretty happy with the result. Regarding silicones in general, I love them all and it’s never enough for me. You definitely need a light weight one for face products, a heavier one for hair products, cyclymethicone for both hair products and if you decide making dual phase makeup remover (I am currently struggling with one), and a polymer like the one I menioned above for lotions and primers (superior silky feel). Makingcosmetics has Dimethicone fluid 10 cps only. It is my favorite for face products. I do not recommend you to spend money on Dimethicone Satin. It’s much more expensive and nothing special.

We use PDMS 350 CSt (momentive) in cosmetic/pharma cream.Works fine.Rate Fluctuate due to availability. India. -
I have been using 500 for everything becaise thats all i have.
