  • When do companies add collagen?

    Hi everyone! 😊

I’m currently working on developing my own moisturizing face cream and have a question for those experienced in cosmetic formulation.

I’m wondering when and how to add collagen peptides to a cream formulation? How do companies typically add collagen to their creams? If you’re using collagen peptides in powder form, should they be added during the water phase (which is usually heated), or after the emulsion is formed, when the cream has cooled down?

I’m concerned about whether heating might degrade the collagen peptides. I’d really appreciate any tips, references, or experiences you can share!

    Thanks in advance! 🙏

    Hi,

What does the manufacturer say in its guidance that prompted your question? -regardless of how experienced people are, it is impossible for them to know all the details about every ingredient out there.

I do not use it but I assume adding it under 40C is a sensible choice.

Also, I assume you already know that it won’t penetrate the skin, so a good combination of humectants might/will do a better job.

Some need to be dispersed into the oil phase and some in the water phase. Some need mild heating to avoid crystallization while others are water soluble. Tepid to lightly warm is a good middle ground. I’ve made a serum in cold water after it cooled down and it was ok. If you go to the ingredient website sometimes they have a formulation guide. I use lotion crafters.

The answer to “When do companies add collagen?” is simple. When they want to make money.

Products with added collagen are profit generators.

The research literature suggests that collagen cannot be incorporated into the skin via creams/lotions/washes.

You are missing ‘peptide’ part. OP uses not collagen, but collagen peptides.
