  • Transparency Enhancer for liquid Hand Soap

Posted by amman177 on October 28, 2015 at 8:10 pm

I am trying to make a Liquid Soap, for that purpose I am using the following ingredients:
    Tap Water : 80%

    SLES 70% : 11%
    Cocamidopropyl Betaine : 2%
    Cocamide DEA : 2%
    Glycerine : 1%
    Disodium EDTA: 0.05%
    Propylene Glycol: 1%
    Triclosan : 15%
    Fragrance (Lemon) : 0.75%
    Dye (yellow) : 0.0005%
    Methyl Parabin : 0.1%
    Propyl Parabin : 0.1%
Sodium Chloride (table Salt) : 1.6%

    Procedure:
    1. I mix the dye in water to achieve the desired color solution.
    2. Add fragrance + M.Parabin + P.Parabin + Di sodium EDTA + Triclosan + Glycerin in Propylene Glycol.
    3. Mixing the two solutions.
    4. Now adding SLES, till it dissolve completely.

    5. Add Cocamidopropyl Betaine followed by Cocamide DEA.
    6. in the end adding NaCl to adjust the Viscosity.

    P.H range = 6-7.

    My Queries:
    1. Any Suggestions to improve the quality of my product.
    2. Any kind of Treatment of water to eliminate dust/Particles etc.
    3. How to increase the Tranparency of the Soluiotn.?
4.Does the Table salt is as effective as the Cosmetic grade Commercial Salt? (As Cosmetic grade Commercial Salt is 10 times costly as table salt).

    Your responses is highly appreciable.

    1.  What do you mean by improving the quality? What characteristic do you want to be different? If clarity is your issue you probably need a solubilizer like Polysorbate 20 or Oleth 40 to mix with your fragrance before adding it.

    2.  Keep your batch mostly covered when making it. And run it through a mesh filter when your finished. And only make it in a clean environment.
    3.  Using the solubilizer as stated above.
    4.  I doubt there is much difference between commercial salt and table salt except table salt probably is Iodized which may not be good. Commecial grade salt should not be that expensive.
That’s all I’ve got.  Anyone else?

@:Perry Thanks a lot for your time.

    1. From quality, I refer to Viscosity, Looks, texture and after wash feel. ( Keeping in mind that the product maintains its original colored Liquid Look)

    Like this.
     2. Do you recommend Alum for treating Water?

    3. Does this solubilizer effect the transparency of the Solution?

You need to use distilled or deionised water rather than tap water.

What is the activity of your triclosan? 15% seems very high. Is it supposed to be 1.5% or 0.15%. I think that Triclosan in hand washes is limited to 0.3%.

If you are having issues with transparency then this is probably caused by your fragrance and you could try adding a solubiliser as Perry suggested. I would suggest making a sample without fragrance and see if that is clear. Then you will know if that is what your issue is.

If it was my formula I would probably increase the Cocamidopropyl betaine.

    Hope this helps

    @:ozgirl  Thanks For your reply.

There is an error in my thread, you are right it is 0.15%.

As I am not interested to make my product like an emulsion, that’s why I used Fragrance Essence not Fragrance Oil, Now my product is colored translucent Liquid but it is Dull, I need to enhance the transparency to the level as in above picture.
Can you tell my whether Polysorbate-20 convert the into emulsion or maintain its transparency.

    Waiting for suggestions.

    Hi amman177

The improvement parameters (Viscosity, Looks, texture and after wash feel) you mentioned are unfortunately all very subjective and don’t mean anything for a formulator (except that the customer is not happy). You have to be more precise.

Regarding the transparency a solubilizer is the second thing to test after ozgirl s advice to make a sample without fragrance.

A solubiliser like polysorbate 20 will improve transparency if the problem is with your fragrance.

@:David and @:Ozgirl I will try my formula with PolySorbate.

What about water treatment process with Alum?

The other thing to keep in mind is that actual “table salt” is not pure salt. It almost always has a flow aid added to it, usually silica or calcium silicate, to act as an absorbent for atmospheric water vapor. (If it didn’t, it would quickly become a solid block). Find a source for pure salt.

Also, if you can’t afford deionized water, you will absolutely need to filter the tap water very well.

Tell us how clear your formula is without fragrance, and we can go from there.

Triclosan is a substance that should not be in soap, it is an environmental contaminant.

    Thanks Everyone for their words.

However can you please explain me about “DiteClear” a substance/solution use in below mention video link, as the solution of Polysorbate-20 and Fragrance make a cloudy emulsion, while adding DiteClear make it transparent.

    Perhaps you should read

Alum is only used to help remove particulate matter from water and you will need to remove the  soluble mineral salts (Calcium, magnesium, iron) for the best results.

    Hi everyone,
In my next formulation, along with adding  polysorbbate-20, I am also thinking to decrease water % to 72-75% and increasing SLES to 14% and Cocamidopropyl Betaine to 4-5 %.

    Suggestion required.

    @:David and @:Ozgirl
Can you also suggest me the % of Polysorbate I have to use in formulation and when it is added??

Most times, it pays to change just one thing at a time. That way you know what change does what.

For Polysorbate 20, use it at 1:1 with your fragrance to begin with. Pre-mix it with the fragrance, and then add the mixture when you usually add the fragrance.

I used Polysorbate-20 in my formula, what I found is that the original formula has more transparent as compare to the formula with Polysorbat-20.
I would like to produce a soap with some shine and reflexes in it like a glass.
