  • Transparency being compromised with SQ-7 & D-Panthenol

    Hi

With following Body Wash formulation, I get a clear transparent blend.

    HEATED PHASE
    SCI - 10%
    S/L Sarcosinate - 10%
    CAPB - 10%
    Versathix - 3%
    Water - 20%

    WATER PHASE
    Glycerin - 3%
    Water q.s. to 100%

    COOL DOWN PHASE
    Fragrance - 1%
    Preservative - 1%

Water Phase is mixed with Heated Phase at <40°C.

However, when I incorporate 1% SQ-7 and 1% D-Panthenol in the Water Phase, the transparency is slightly compromised.
I incorporated 0.1% Di-sodium EDTA in Water Phase before adding SQ-7, Glycerin and D-Panthenol (also reduced SQ-7 and D-Panthenol to 0.5% each) but nothing improved.

How should incorporate those humectants without compromising the transparency?

    What is SQ-7?

Oh, I apologise, it should be PQ-7.

Are you sure it’s not the fragrance? 1% is quite some, and can produce turbidity.

Anyway, could you change the order of addition like this:

Water, EDTA, PQ-7, 1/4 of your CAPB, SCI, Sarcosinate (check here if the solution is clear), a premix of fragrance and the rest of CAPB, the rest of ingredients and Versathix.

I have tried earlier without PQ-7 and D-Panthenol, the blend was crystal clear.

As for your suggested mixing order, what I understand is as below:
      a) Heat Phase: SCI + SLSarcosinate + 2.5% CAPB + Some Water
      b) Fragrance Phase: 7.5% CAPB + 1% Fragrance Oil
      c) Water Phase: Remaining Water + EDTA + PQ7
      d) When (a) is completely dissolved and cooled down, add (c) to (a). [CHECK if the solution remains clear]
      e) Add (b) to main blend. [CHECK again]
      f) Add D-Panthenol. [CHECK again]
      g) Add Versathix

Is it what you want me to do?

Everything in the main tank, in the order I propose and without heating (you could heat if you want, but SCI mixes well without heating). Now, d-panthenol is water soluble, so it won’t do much in a cleanser that rinses-off. You could just drop it.

I followed your order and it worked like a charm.
          Bundle of Thanks 🙂
