Supply Chain Issues.
I am curious to see if any other Chemists in the Commercial Market are beginning to see the effect of supply chain issues.Last week we requested a sample of a particular raw material and we were quoted a 12 week lead time on the material.Yesterday I spent about an hour or so on the phone helping a client to source a raw material. Their initial supplier couldn’t even project a lead time.If you are seeing these issues, in what classes of materials are you seeing these shortages? -

I had reached out to a supplier for Lactic Acid and was told they were neither sampling, nor taking orders for it. Another distributor told me that there was limited stock from their sources. I’m still trying to find a supply today…

@Microformulation, Yes, the problem is getting to be significant every day with almost all classes of ingredients, especially those from overseas. Silicones, silicone emulsifiers, some preservatives, some fragrant compounds. Sometimes even the simplest compounds like Urea becomes an issue. I would add the shortage of packaging to paint the complete picture.

I have seen this with any behentrimonium compound. I just got quote with a ridiculously high price and a continual push to try a new alternative.

I have heard of significant problems getting silicones.

I am in Australia and we have been seeing supply chain issues for months across almost all types of materials (surfactants, solvents, silicones, EDTA).We have some surfactants go from being stock items (2 -3 day delivery) to 5 to 6 month lead time. This is because the suppliers can’t get them on a ship.I had one supplier refuse to provide a lead time for a surfactant until we put in an order.Silicones are particularly hard to find and prices have gone up. I was told that manufacturers are using simple silicones like dimethicone as feedstock for their higher value modified silicones rather than just selling the dimethicone because supplies are so short.EDTA is going up in price.It is only going to get worse here as Coronavirus isolation is crippling our local transport and warehousing businesses.It is is certainly a challenging time -
We have definitely been having an issue with silicones. In the last week, Botanical Blends have gotten backed up and we have had to source aggressively to even get a 4 week lead time on samples.

Yep, significant issues. After delays, we have two shipments in the air right now with FedEx from two different suppliers. In this part of the world, they will come via China, and usually, they would e there just 3-4 hours. In recent times this has stretched to 3-4 days.
