  • Replacement for discontinued surfactant

Posted by JonahRay on December 20, 2024 at 1:55 pm

Hi friends! I’m devastated. The primary surfactant (70% active material sodium methyl cocoyl taurate powder) in my facial cleanser seems to be getting discontinued at all the distributors I’ve contacted. I’ve contacted a few suppliers who have a 95% active material version but I’m still waiting to hear from them.

The product is a gentle powdered facial cleanser. My customers are obsessed with this formula so I’m just worried about making significant changes but I’m having a really hard time finding replacements of this exact surfactant. Is there a surfactant that’s readily available that you’d recommend as a replacement based on your experiences?

    Any help would be appreciated!

You said you’ve contacted the distributors: can’t you contact the manufacturer(s)?

This way you’ll know for sure if it’s a production issue, or a “chain” related issue.

    HI, check with Vantage-leuna.de

I got from them a samples of Metaupon OMT solid and pasty.

Pasty one is specified to have 38% actives but contains unreacted acids at around 15%. I combine it with Metaupon SI 57 with 56% actives, because I got free sample also. I used 6% Metaupon OMT pasty and 4% Metaupon SI 57. I like it because the cleanser remains transparent. If you add any beneficial oils you may have to heat it a bit. I like it to have a gell consistency and 1 or 2 % glycerol or glycol do wanders and keep it completely clear even when cooling down.

I like the look when the cleanser is completely clear and viscous but gives rich and luxurious lather when applied. For this I would not take something harsh , try bit of betaine. 2-3% is enough and gives me rich lather (I have Yeser CAB 45% actives).
