  • Question about re-creating a salicylic acid toner, please

    Hi, all.
    I would like to create a scaled-down version of this toner, ingredient list shown below.  I have a question about creating just the “BHA”/salicylic acid portion of it.
    1. Is it most likely that they are solubolizing the salicylic acid in the butylene glycol?  Or the ethanol?  I assume this is a fairly easy process and that no extra solubolizing agents are needed (assuming the below list is 100% complete/accurate)?
    2. Is it correct that they are not using any additives to adjust the pH higher?
    Thank you.
    Aqua (Water), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Glycolic Acid, Butylene
    Glycol, Alcohol Denat., Vaccinium Myrtillus Fruit Extract, Coffea
    Arabica (Coffee) Seed Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract,
    Salicylic Acid, Centella Asiatica Extract, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel
    Extract, Allantoin, Echinacea Purpurea Extract, Resveratrol, Malus
    Domestica Fruit Cell Culture Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria)
    Flower Extract, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf
    Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Water,
    Saccharum Officinarum (Sugar Cane) Extract, Polysorbate 20, Sodium Pca,
    Propylene Glycol, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Fruit Extract, Citrus
    Medica Limonum (Lemon) Fruit Extract, Ethylhexylglycerin, Acer
    Saccharum (Sugar Maple) Extract, Potassium Sorbate, Citrus Reticulata
    (Tangerine) Peel Oil, Sodium Benzoate, Xanthan Gum, Glycerin, Lecithin,
    Limonene, Linalool

    @suswang8

    The Salicylic Acid is most likely dissolved in a combination of Butylene Glycol and Alcohol.

    Thank you, @MarkBroussard.  So combine them together (maybe 5-7pct concentration each?), heat them up, and then add 1-2% salicylic acid?

    @suswang8

    Yes, that would appear to be about right.  Firgure the Glycolic Acid is loaded at 8-10%, so you would be in the right ballpark
