Preservatives in personal lubricant
Hi, I’m busy formulating a lube. Used 0.1% Sodium benzoate and 0.1% Potassium sorbate. Sample was spiked with Aspergillus and failed 7 day test i.e. growth continued. pH is 5.79. Any advise on which preservatives to use or current levels of preservatives.

You’re light on both … NaB 0.35 and PS 0.2 would be more appropriate. But, without more information on what all is in your formula, not really possible to give you any better advice.

Also for those materials, the pH should really be closer (or below) 5.0

Formulation is basically 35% glycerin, flavourant, preservative and balance is water.
Added NaB at 0.1% due to concerns regarding taste of product.
Also in food max NaB is 0.1% so wanted to keep in that range.
A colleague recommended Optiphen??? -
What standard are you using for PET? Don’t think either USP 51 nor EP has relevant day 7 for what I’d assume is your category. Doesn’t change the need here for better preservation that might be better served with a paraben.
Suggest you review what’s used in marketed products - esp. US where I think 501k filling is needed.

lowering your product ph arround 4,5 to ensure benzoic and sorbate can work better
