  • Polysorbate 20 vs Polysorbate 80: Use for aqueous formulas with essential oils

    Hi, all.

I am interested in learning more about formulating with essential oils in water-based formulations (facial toners, etc.).

From what I have seen online, both Poly 20 and Poly 80 are recommended as among the better ones to use to solubilize essential oils in water.  Does any know the nuances (pluses and minuses) of one vs the other?

I am intrigued about why someone might need/want to use both in a single formula after seeing this ingredient list online:  “Water, tea tree oil, glycerin, polysorbate 20, polysorbate 80, carbomer, triethanolamine.”  Is it recommended that both are used for some reason?

    Thank you.
