CA cosmetic manufacturers get an organic certification to produce organic products? I know about certifications for raw materials. Where do you apply?

You could start with a Google search to find organic certifiers that meet your particular needs.

When we were manufacturing for various brands globally, some of the brands requested organic certification for the products we manufactured. But in the end, most did not take up the certification. The manufacturers realised that most consumers make decisions based not on third-party certifications but on the confidence they have in the brand and its integrity.

<i style=””>Thank you for this information.

I understand the organic certification for raw materials and such. Is there organic certification for the actual manufacturer? My co worker was speaking about a CM getting this for their facility.

Yes, CM’s must be Organic Certified to be able to manufacture Organic Certified products. CM’s who are not Organic Certified cannot manufacure Organic Certified products.

Thank you for the information. Is this for a completely organic product? A few certified organic raw materials? Where can i read up about this? I have several questions about this. I have tried several searches and just organic raw materials and foods show up.

That’s because the Certified Organic regulations were developed for food products, not cosmetics. NSF has established a certification NSF 305 to address cosmetic products, but it is not as prominent a certification as the USDA.

There are two levels - Certified Organic must contain at least 95% organic certified ingredients. Made With Organic must contain at least 70% organic certified ingredients.

To get an Organic Certification, the Contract Manufacturer must be certified to manufacture organic products and you must use organic certified ingredients as mentioned above.

For a CM can get certified to manufacture Organic products, it must go through the process that is administered by an Organic Certification Authority such as Oregon Tithe. The first step for a CM is to get in touch with a Certification Authority who will guide them through the requirements, conduct the inspections and issue to certificate. There are certification authorities in most every state in the US.

We have helped >20 lines get certified as USDA NOP Organic certifications. Unless you have a formalized, recorded, and well-designed SOP/QA program in place, you will need to get one in place. The USDA NOP Certifying bodies will insist upon these prerequisites in my experience.
