afternoon all, working on a project that is an olive oil/beeswax body salve and finding as it cools, it has a tendency to form olive “butter” crystals in the product. We validated by HPLC that these were indeed olive oil and not part of the beeswax. We are looking at going from a food-grade olive oil to a winterized version and maybe 2nd or 3rd pressings to get as many of the higher chain triglycerides out as possible to reduce the formation of these crystals. The crystals are not hard and liquefy immediately when rubbed on the skin but my client is wanting to get this product clear of the issue.

Any thoughts? Any recommendations on who would supply winterized olive oil here in the states?

    Thanks,

I think that you may be overthinking this issue.

When I was running Indochine Natural (2006-2024) I formulated and produced similar olive oil/beeswax body salves for various Private Label clients globally. A lot of these issues of crystals forming in the product came down to the ratio of olive oil to beeswax. So lots of experimentation and rigorous Excel documentation of recipes and results. I cracked it after a few months.

And then my next worry was the exports going to various climates globally and the FedEx/DHL courier conditions between my factory and the wholesale buyer.

These phenomenon is tipically called blooming. You can find few threads on the topic in the forum. This usually happens due to different polarities of what you want to mix.
