Hello, all. Having a difficult time with one of my formulas and wondering what I’m doing wrong.

The product is far too waxy and is almost impossible to get it to leave my palms and transfer to my hair. I need to increase slip, maintain the matte finish and I need really great long lasting hold WITHOUT it feeling plastic-like or hard. Here’s are my current ingredients. Any ideas? Thank you!

    • Aloe
    • Shea Butter
    • Kaolin
    • Beeswax
    • Carnauba Wax
    • Candelilla Wax
    • Polysorbate 80
    • Grapeseed Oil
    • Jojoba Oil
    • Sweet Almond Oil
    • Bentonite
    • Phenoxyethanol
    • Fragrance
    • Sea Salt
    • Silica

Yep, I’ve been there, done that during the 20 years I owned skin care manufacturing facilities in Viet Nam and Malaysia. My approach? Set up a series of Excels and meticulously record the results of various ingredient combinations. Over time, the ingredients will reveal themselves. Then once you have some conclusions, field test these on potential or current customers.

And this process can take some months. But the product outcomes will be worth it.

Waxes are hard to emulsify, that’s whay they might be getting out of your emulsion and give that waxy feeling. I recommend you to check commercial products so you understand better their fórmulas. For a hair pomade (I think that’s what you’re trying to do), a high amount of a waxy emulsifier like ceteareth-20 can work. Also, styling polymers work well for hold.
