Moisturizer
Hi everyone,
I need some help in the formulation of an abrasive waterless hand cleaner (you know, for use in a garage, typically smelling orange…). We want to make a simple but effective formulation. My question is about moisturizer. Formulations that I found often use natural plant extracts, oleic acid and other things that we don’t have in our facilities. So I want to know if I can use other type of substances to add a moisturizing effect in this abrasive cleaner (like glycerine, propylene glycol, etc….).Thanks for the informations! -

Glycerine will work OK. And add some aloe vera extract.

It really depends on what is in your formula. But petrolatum and mineral oil can also help aid with moisturization.

@Perry, it’s for mechanics, I suspect they will be trying to remove the petrolatum and mineral oil from their hands, actually (laughing). This could be a simple formulation with a friendly surfactant such as ALS and the degreaser will of course be D-Limonene, suspended in a carbomer gel.

Thanks for your answers.Like Belassi said it, we try to do a thing with wallnut shell powder (abrasive) mixed with carbomer, surfactants and some moisturizer. I know there is a much formulations with limonene in it, but is there any risk of sensitizing because this product (or degradation products) are recognized like “sensitizer” I think? Is there any other solvent, preferably “environmentally friendly” that we can use?

D-Limonene is the industry standard for this kind of product. Just be careful to source fresh (unoxidised) supplies, keep it in glass (not plastic) with minimum exposure to air.
