  • Make a clear gel with low pH level

Posted by Faustin on January 26, 2021 at 5:51 pm

hello, my name is Faustina from Indonesia, I am very amateur in terms of formulations … I want to ask what gelling agent is good for making clear gel with low pH, I have tried HEC but it’s not like in journals and others forums that said HEC can dissolve without bulking and make clear gel.

If it is true, why is it that my HEC solution is not clear and has so many bubbles there, and what can i do with that?

Hi. Yes, hec cannot make clear gels. You may opt to use Sepimax Zen, it is a good polymer, and produces clear gel.

+1 for other options. Carbomers are popular nowadays and give clear gels.
HEC is cloudy, for sure, although it’s worth noting there are different types (described to me as E-type, F-type, which made me think of marques of Jaguar cars), with them having different characteristics e.g. for ethanol incorporation.

Of course, the more you add the cloudier the resulting gel will likely be. There are also higher viscosity HEC/HPMC/EC’s that you could use less of to have a similar resulting viscosity.

    @zacchaeus‘ suggestion is good also.

@Benz3ne ah I’ve tried carbomers but it didn’t work, because the carbomer can’t get to a low pH level. Thanks ben for your informations ^^

@zacchaeus hmm, I’ve never heard of that even for the INCH name .. let me find and check first .. thanks for the input ^^

    What is the percentage?

My HEC is completely clear at %0.5

What you just showed us is pretty clear or translucent, it may become clearer if you leave overnight.
One of the better gel makers I have tried for clarity is EMT-10 by sepinov.

EMT10 is cloudy as well and it’s isn’t as electrolyte resistant as Zen. Zen is the best option when clarity and resistance to low ph is important.

@Abdullah ah but i need high viscosity formulation ^^

@”Dr Catherine Pratt” yes i had tried it, i leave it overnight but just the bubbles that disappear

@ngarayeva001 yesss finally i can get it in olshop, in indonesia zen is very2 rare and expensive…. but omg im so love it, i had try HPMC, carbomer, HEC but this one is that one i search for <3
    Thanks for your input  @zacchaeus

    Hi @Faustin
Sepimax Zen is suitable for low pH. You can contact Ms Aswinda in Megasetia.

How to prevent color fading or discoloration of clear gels?
