  • Issue in formulating face cream

I made a face cream using 16% oils and xanthan gum mixed with glycerin as an emulsifier three days ago.

The xanthan gum percentage is 1.5% and the glycerin is 5%. It was smooth in the last days but started to look powdery in the container. It gathers in little fine clumps but the clumps don’t stay on the skin, they get absorbed fast once applied. It also smells just like before and it didn’t change colour. What could cause this change in texture?

Oils separation. Neither Xanthan Gum nor Glycerin are emulsifiers. What you do is just making a thick gel and then disperse oils as small droplets inside. Since there is no emulsifier with time these droplets stick together, separate and make a coating around lumps of swollen Xanthan Gum.

That does not sound like a formula for a cream.

Maybe, a little background before you get started…. you know….walk before you run?
