  • Is it possible to buy Grapefruit Seed Extract that is not adulterated?

Posted by Graillotion on February 13, 2022 at 7:36 pm

I know the Mommy bloggers, trying to use it as a preservative has forced many of the suppliers to ‘sneak’ in some nasties, to try and facilitate their use of GSE as a pseudo preservative.

This in turn…has basically taken GSE out of the hands of discerning formulators who might want to use it for a different purpose.

So, What I am asking….is there such a thing as a pure unadulterated GSE available?  If so…who sells it…(preferably small pak…as this is experimental).

@Graillotion, what do you mean by adulterated?

@Syl , it is well known that they add ingredients that will enhance the preservation qualities, so that those that think it is a viable natural preservative will not be disappointed.  However, in trying to evade detection, they often use some less than desirable ingredients.

I am looking for pure GSE, and suspect it does not exist?

Wow, did I warp back to 2005?
Back then there were GSE extracts that were “certified” to be pure and “free” from the adulterants. Lines would demand to use this form and the PET tests all failed.
In the almost 2 decades since then, the Raw Material providers have stepped up and provided so many better alternatives which are more effective.

    Ohhhhhhhhhhhh…. PLEASE don’t think I am using this as a preservative… (I thought I had a tiny bit of respect here…but maybe I am wrong. :) )

Just want to try it in my deo formula. :)

Aloha… (And yes, a patent on that concept.)

Yes, you can purchase Grapefruit Seed Extract from Bio-Botanica, for instance.  I don’t know if it is available from any repackers.

Trust me - THIS time I’m not adulterated.
I’d be cautious.  An  ingredient adulterated in any context is impeached until proven otherwise. Better be confident in origin, process and analytical data that.

Is this what you’re looking for?

INCI Name:Citrus grandis (Grapefruit) Extract and Glycerol and Ascorbic acid

Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) is a powerful broad spectrum citrus based anti-microbial that can be used to extend product shelf life and protect personal skin care formulations against bacteria and fungus. GSE possesses strong antiseptic, germicidal, antibacterial, fungicidal and anti-viral properties and also acts as an anti-oxidant.

INGREDIENTS: Citrus Grandus (Grapefruit) Seed Extract (57%), Glycerol (37%), Ascorbic Acid (3%)
    Contains NO
    Heavy Metals
    PCB’s
    Pesticides
    Propyl Hydroxybenzoate
    Methyl Hydroxybenzoate
    Benzethonium Chloride
    Benzalkonium Chloride
    Triclosan

    USAGE:
    1 - 2%, add post emulsification <40⁰c

This product is for use as a preservative only and is not recommended for internal use.

PureNature has it here in NZ. :)

    @Paprik:

That is exactly what you don’t want.  It is a Grapefruit Extract that they are marketing as a preservative, so most likely it may be spiked with parabens, for instance.

@Grallotion:  You can get Grapefruit Extract from Green Line Botanicals, Carrubba or Bio-Botanica … all reputable suppliers who market it as a skin conditioning ingredient, not as a preservative.

NDA has some INCI: Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Seed Extract (and) Glycerin.
It is marketed as a preservative, but it only contains glycerin.

    @Syl

If it is Grapefruit Seed Extract that is marketed as a preservative, there is a good chance that it is adulterated.

Bingo… @MarkBroussard is spot on…if they even mention preservation, then they are HIGHLY inclined to spike it.

The INCI’s are irrelevant as none of the guilty parties have EVER listed their transgressions on the INCI.

The only thing I can hope for in a supplier with integrity, and the less they promise, the more likely I am to find what I am after.

Thank you, Mark, for the list of suppliers, I will look into them.

This is really the problem with any plant extract.

How can anyone know they are getting Grapefruit extract in Glycerin?
What QA tests are you going to run that would help you identify a solution of Grapefruit extract in glycerin vs a solution of Lemon extract or Orange extract or Watermelon extract or even just a sample of Glycerin with a yellowish dye?
There are very good reasons to be skeptical of raw material suppliers. That’s why you have specifications and Certificate of Analysis tests that you conduct. Don’t rely on your supplier to do it either. They have a motivation to sell you a product that is as inexpensive for them to make.
For ingredients like plant extracts where there is no good way to easily identify what the ingredient is, it’s simple to trick people.
