  • Ingredients that can help increase the staying power.. of watery products

Posted by Bluebird on June 14, 2023 at 1:20 am

What are some ingredients (either as general categories or as specific examples) that can help increase the staying power of ingredients in water type products when applied to the skin?

What I mean is-something that somehow increases your ingredients to stay longer on skin without being easily washed away, for ex, by sweat, so that the effect can last longer.

What have often been used by formulators?

I am not sure I understand the question…. So I’ll start with….cationic emulsifiers….until there is more clarification. 🤣

Maybe apply your knowledge of hair care products…and how they achieve staying power …. in the shower.

Cationic emulsifiers because the skin is negative? That’s very interesting-I’ll look into it. I want to clarify but I am not sure which part was unclear to you so I’ll just try describing in different words. I’m looking for things that help ingredients stay longer and not get easily lost from rubbing, sweating, etc. I guess this can be done via film formation as was pointed out by @gordof , or something that helps ingredients “stick” better to the skin significantly.

what you are searching for is Water Resistance ?? if so you can use Film formers. There are a lot of different film formers out there most are Polymers or Silikones that help improve water resistance on the skin.

There are some “natural enhancers out there effectiveness depends a lot on different parameters.

Find film formers for Personal Care & Cosmetics applications, search data sheets, MSDS and request samples | Prospector (ulprospector.com)

Thank you, I think this may be the category I was looking for-film formers.

@gordof do you know something that’s good to use for a deodorant?

Would it prevent sweating and clog pores/sweat glands (in good or bad ways)?

hmm never used one for a deodorant before. Depending on the country you want to sell your product it can be rather difficult to use a filmformer. In the USA, for example, man tends to keep their armpit Hair in general (of course there is a percentage that shaves) the Filmormer will then sit on the hair and that will probably feel like using a Hairspray for your armpit. Although the armpit is an area that is very much in movement all the time and it could lead to very unpleasant irritating Stinging because of the formed film.

The only one I know of that is flexible enough for that would be polyurethane. For example, Baycusan types are used as Fixatif for Makeup.

Find Baycusan for Personal Care & Cosmetics applications, search data sheets, MSDS and request samples | Prospector (ulprospector.com)

For Perfume Fixation on the skin, I would recommend looking into the raw materials in the link

Find perfume fixative for Personal Care & Cosmetics applications, search data sheets, MSDS and request samples | Prospector (ulprospector.com)

as you can see you can use for example Phenoxyethanol to Fixate a scent to the skin more persistent and at the same time can do your Preservation.

I always used some Triethyl Citrate it works as a deodorant active and at the same time makes the perfume more long-lasting in the Hart note of the scent.

Although if you have the feeling that the scent of the used perfume is fainting too fast contact your perfume supplier and ask them for a more Persistent variant of the perfume you preferred they have a lot of knowledge about how to fix a scent for hours on the skin by combining the right scent components.

But over all, i don’t think you can fixate the Deodorant to live throughout a shower or a swim so that it dose does not need to be applied afterward if that is your goal.

Thank you, “fixed,” stiff armpit hair was something that didn’t come to my mind, haha.

I just want my active ingredients to be more around in general and not get lost/diluted out quickly by sweat. Ideally, something that would help them “hang on” to skin more. Functionally, similar to phenoxyethanol and triethyl citrate for perfume as you said (I didn’t know these do that-thanks for telling me about them)-equivalents for other active ingredients. I was wondering whether there was a general category or a type of “something” that helps active ingredients stay longer on skin.

I suppose water type DO is the worst with that regard, compared to the hard solids or cream types that seem inherently harder to dilute away.

In the case of deo….film formers are generally not the approach taken…as they tend to increase sweat.

Do this little experiment…. Take a dab of any O/W emulsion….drop it in a beaker of water….and swirl for a minute. Do the same with a W/O emulsion…. See if this is not what you are looking for. 🙂

    Aloha.

More info would be helpful in order to assist with this. You mentioned actives. In regards to skincare actives, have you considered penetration enhancers/enhanced delivery? Rather than staying around longer, this would increase efficacy. Glycerin, Propanediol, DMI. Some surfactants/emulsifiers as well.

Oh just regular deo components. I imagine for deo, surface action is quite important, but of course I’d be eager to use enhanced/deeper delivery. I didn’t know glycerin propandiol, DMI could aid, as well as surfactants/emulsifiers (I suppose emulsifier part is what Graillotion was hinting at, though I didn’t completely understand). Thanks, I’ll look more into these.
