Home Cosmetic Science Talk Formulating General Ideal skin pH to accept products

  • Ideal skin pH to accept products

I have seen dozens of research documents pertaining to the pH of products but I have one very specific question that I cannot find the answer. I hope my expert friends here can help. Is there a scientifically proven ideal pH of the skin in order for it to most effectively accept products such as moisturizers and serums? Thank you so much!

    No.

There are lots of reasons but mainly

    1. We don’t know what it means to be “most effective.”

    2. Everyone’s skin is genetically different.

    3. Everyone has a different microbiome which may or may not have an impact on product performance

Also, skin itself is a solid and has no pH. What people mean when they say skin pH is the pH of the solution made by scraping off the stuff on top of skin and mixing it in water.

For the most part, discussion of pH when it comes to skincare is just science washing. It’s meant to dazzle consumers but has very little impact on product performance.

As your skin is pretty forgiving and accommodating, so we use this opportunity to formulate additional hurdles into the formulas. A pH of 4.6 to 4.8, your skin will enjoy….and starts to make the microbes in our potions a little uncomfortable. One more step towards their ultimate demise.

    Good Luck.
