  • Help with creamy oil formulation?

    Hello,

    I am looking to formulate a similar product as the one I will be listing ingredients for below. I will swap out some of the oils for different ones and would like to add fragrance instead of lavender oil. I don’t even know where to begin and how much glyceryl stearate to add. I would like to make a 100 gram batch or so to try it. This buttery emulsified oil mixture is in a pump and melts as soon as you touch it. Thanks in advance for any help/direction.

    Ingredients on label, in order…

    Olive oil

    Jojoba oil

    Grapeseed oil

    Sunflower oil

    Castor oil

    Glyceryl stearate

    lavender oil

    Tocopherol (Vitamin E)

    We produced an enormously popular organic face oil that was exported globally. And based on this experience since 2009, I would suggest the following:

    We never considered using glyceryl stearate . For what purpose? We were very mindful of our target audience which would consider glyceryl stearate as a synthetic ingredient.

    In my opinion, I would not use Lavender oil. Do your research and you will find it has a high percentage of allergens. I would suggest a more interesting formulation of essential oils with lower allergens.

    Finally, when formulating a new product, aim to provide customers with something they don’t already have, something they are not - it’s not so much about function benefits, but more about psycho-social ones. Elevate their life. Help them to live up to their own principles and expectations, be they social or ecological.

    @mikethair for this formulation, I understand that the glyceryl stearate would be used as an emulsifier and to improve texture. As stated, I would not be using lavender oil. I am just trying to get the percentages close to get the texture of this product and I’m looking for help with that, Thanks.

    @Shoogiegirl have you never heard of “The Seven Percent Solution”? It is the title of a Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes novel but based on a true rule of drug chemistry: when unsure of the starting point use 7.0% and see what happens. Based on that result you’ll know whether to increase or decrease the GMS. You may also consider using GMS-S.E. since it is an emulsifier whereas GMS alone is not (it is a builder.)

    @chemicalmatt Thanks, I’ll give both the 7% and the gms-se a try.
