  • Hair jelly formulation using flax seeds

Posted by kavya on July 13, 2015 at 3:51 am

I am trying to formulate a hair jelly that can provide hold. I have narrowed down to use flaxseed and xanthan gum (to thicken) as the main ingredients to provide hold. At home I make flaxseed gel by boiling flax seeds in water and then strain it. I am now interested in making it commercially. So, my question is, how can I do this at commercial level, like, is that possible to follow the same procedure of boiling seeds in water or is there any other way around. There are few marketed products that use linseed extract and xanthan gum as the main ingredients to make hair jelly. I have researched a lot but did not able to find anything on it.

It can be done on a  small industrial/commercial level, just like you are doing it on a smaller scale.

How large a batch will you need?

The third party manufacturer that I have talked to have the limit of minimum batch size of 500-1000kg. So I am assuming that I have to start with that much size. Please suggest me if it is possible to scale up to this limit.

Almost anything is possible - if you spend enough money.

If you’re sure you can sell 500kg of product, then you need to find out if your manufacturer can filter/strain your batch cost-effectively. Filter socks aren’t that expensive, but they may clog too quickly. Better filtering is expensive. You might need to see if you can still get a good gel if you put the flaxseeds in a ffine mesh bag before you boil them.

Thanks a lot Bob!! I will talk to the manufacturers and see if they can work this out. Thanks again for the quick reply!!

I just have another question in my mind incase my flax thing doesn’t work out commercially. Do you have any idea about any other natural main ingredient that I can use in place of flax seed to get the cost effective natural hair gel or jelly?

Gelatin or pectin ought to work. Preservation will be critical. But I’d stick with the flax seed if at all possible, it’s unique as far as I can tell.

Try a small batch putting your flax seeds in something like this first, before you boil them.
