Hair Cleansing Oil
Hey guys,
So I have been learning to make cosmetics for about 6 months now (self taught through hundreds of hours spent on Google) and I have learned a lot (I really am enjoying myself). The only products I just can’t figure out are natural hair cleansing oils.
The idea is to clean oils with oils (I do understand this part of it). However, I have been unable to find any formulas of any kind on Google and so I have been trying to put together bits and pieces of the puzzle for a while now. I simply have no idea what oils to use to get rid of other oils. I would appreciate it if you guys could give me a gentle nudge in the right direction because I am pretty lost.
I have been able to find a lot of face cleansing oil formulas and I was wondering if they are similar?
The cleansing oil that I have been trying to recreate is called Sheh●Voo but they don’t have an ingredients list on their website, so I might just have to order some and check it out.

Jane Barber, I think you have missed the point. The request is for hair cleansing with oil, not face cleansing.
Personally, I thing the current request is a non-starter. I would hate the feel of oil in my hair and to have that there permanently would sent me rushing to the shampoo bottle.
I have just checked the Shehvoo web site and found the product is not quite as natzam44 claims.

As I’ve always understood it,the concept is to replace the oil in the hair (sebum) with a mixture of sebum and the “cleansing” oil. (This is not a new idea, by the way. It dates back to Roman times)
What you’re doing is using the principle of “like dissolves like”. The only criteria you need for your oil is that it is reasonably soluble in sebum. You put the oil on your hair, rub it in, the oil and sebum mix together, you remove excess oil and sebum with a towel, and you’re done. If you use a lighter, thinner oil than sebum, your hair should feel less “greasy”. No horrible, nasty, evil, soul-destroying surfactants needed.
This Shehvoo stuff seems to be quite different, and I suspect there’s a fair chunk of surfactants in the product, and not much, if any, oil.

@johnb I was able to get my hands on the list of ingredients for sheh●Voo (not sure if it is the right one) and as @Bobzchemist says, there are surfactants and not much oil.
I guess this product is not what it seems. The reason I was intrigued by it is because one of the Youtubers I watch made a video on it calling it an “oil cleanser”.
I guess we can’t trust products these days.

I’m not sure you could ever trust products.
We used to sell a product called “Hot Oil Treatment”. There was no oil in it. But it was a very popular product and it made the hair look and feel great.

There’s an oil soluble/miscible surfactant/emulsifier, Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate, that you can add to an oil base. When you rub it into the hair and then rinse with water, it “milks” … no foaming, but the surfactant does help wash off excess oil.

And the Egyptians rubbed donkey dung on cuts and burns … LOL! (that’s true, but I’m making a joke).
Personally … oil cleansing … I understand the concept, but don’t think it is effective without a surfactant incorporated. I mean, why not rub dirt on your face so it absorbs the dirt already on your skin?

@Perry That ‘Hot Oil Treatment’ farce is still a rage in MENA region. In fact so much that few big names started the same product, they toed the line for ‘Snake Oil’ as well looking at the demand here.
