  • Formulating with Potassium Cocoate, can it be highlighted as Coconut Oil?

Posted by Venture23 on April 21, 2023 at 10:30 pm

In a formulation I am working on, there is Potassium Cocoate, which is made from/with coconut oil. It’s really important for the final product to be able to claim and highlight Coconut Oil for marketing purposes. I am not using straight Coconut Oil in the formulation and the INCI name for Potassium Cocoate is Potassium Cocoate and the ingredients are Water, Coconut Oil, Potassium Hydroxide. The ingredient label will list the INCI name but when describing the product and mentioning star ingredients on the packaging does anyone know if it would be acceptable to call out Coconut Oil even though Coconut Oil as a standalone ingredient is not present?

Don;t know your claims but it appears you’re selling a soap - not a cosmetic. Ingredient labeling is not necessary.

You seriously sound shifty as h***.

    What is wrong with you?

If it is important for you to claim coconut oil – then you need to use coconut oil. Hello.

Did you ever hear of honesty in formulating?

Also - if you are creating a product to claim moisturizing properties from “coconut oil” such as stating your product can moisturize the skin, create softer skin, or smoother skin, etc,

or anything beyond simply cleansing –

then you are creating a cosmetic.

If so – a cosmetic is federally required to have every ingredient listed,

and it is your *legally required federal responsibility* to list every ingredient correctly.

I suggest you give up until you gain some ethics.

Wow, such strong emotions and you’re coming at this wrong. My point in asking this question is so that I can be as honest as possible. I’m not trying to deceive anyone and I know I’m formulating a cosmetic product, there is no uncertainty there. All ingredients would be listed, again, no uncertainty there. My confusion is that the final product, which is not a soap, would contain Coconut Oil via the Potassium Cocate which is made from 100% coconut oil, so would calling out Coconut Oil be OK without adding additional oil?

What. you are actually making is a Liquid Castille Soap. Your INCI would be Water, Potassium Cocoate. You can mention in your marketing that it is made from Coconut Oil, nothing wrong with that. Check out the marketing language from other manufacturers of Liquid Castille Soaps for guidance.

      Hi Mark,

Thanks for your answer. Sorry for the confusion, the final product is a face scrub. The liquid Castile soap is just a part of the formulation. From your answer, and from what I was suspecting, highlighting Coconut Oil because it comes directly from the Potassium Cocoate is acceptable even though I’m not adding additional Coconut Oil?

Ingredients derived from Coconut Oil - OK ✔

Contains Coconut Oil - Not OK ✖

    Most consumers wouldn’t care.

Alternatively just add a small amount of coconut oil to the formula (e.g. 0.05%)

We were producing a lot of this and exporting to various countries, including the US and Europe.

    The INCI included:

For solid soap bars: sodium cocoate (coconut oil)

For liquids: potassium cocoate (coconut oil)

Over a period we never had any problems
