Ok what about surveying people offline just to know what are their concerns, the products they use in their daily routine, what would be their dream cleanser like etc..
I will go from general questions to specific ones catered to the cleansing oil.For instance:

What skincare products do you use?  How many products and which of them do you use the in AM / PM? What do you remove your makeup, spf and dirt with? What are the concerns you are trying to address with the products?

For example of in depth; for example if the person uses a toner: For the toner, why do you use it? Which brand are you using? Why do you choose or why do you prefer that particular product? Have you used and previous toners or similar products before? How does it compare?

If you could make your own cleansing product what would it be like?

etc. so based on this i will see if my cleansing oil is in demand or not.Do you agree?

Because people could try my product but this is not an indicator as to whether there is a demand for the product. They are trying for free not buying. Im trying to think of it from different angles to be as efficient as possible:)

What other ways can i use to gauge there is a demand for my cleansing oil aside from survey that are not expensive?

The other way that is not expensive is to talk to someone that already knows the answer you need.

Then you said Or choose one your brand concept stands for.Im not sure i understand what you mean ” choose one my brand stands for?

This is open for interpretation. If you don’t get it then there’s not much need to look to deep into this.

so if i interview 30 girls and all say we use cleansing oil then no need to do a balm and vice versa right?

    Yes.

Potential pattern & frequency of product usage ( WHY IS this important Jemolian please ?:))

This affect the demand of the product. If they don’t use it as often, you don’t need to produce such as large batch.

Global or local events affecting product usage and sales due to user requirements ( can you pls give an example? )

It’s already part of my story / analogy.

So here you mean i should analyze their answers and based on that decide on which product i will develop: a balm or an oil correct?

Yes. At this point, you are just circling around the idea too much. I’m not sure why you are doing that.

You said i can target Gen z if my product fits their needs and budget. But we know in marketing that by trying to sell to everyone you end up selling to none.

Realistically if you sell to none, then there’s no demand for your product. If product can appeal to different people, sometimes outside of your target demographic. If the percentage of those people increase, you are telling me that you don’t intend to market to them to increase sales?

This is the part where i’m stuck the most? Should i go ahead and make a small batch and test the market or should I as per @Jemolian survey the audience then make the product?

It’s up to you. If you insist on launching the cleansing oil, you can go ahead to find a suitable place to distribute the samples and get feedback. If you want to plan the development, you can survey then provide the samples to the survey group.

even if i request feedback they might say things that will make me happy such as : oh i loved your oil but in reality they didnt. Imagine if i go ahead and produce based on their positive yet misleading feedback.

It depends on the people and culture. You should know your people well enough.

Because people could try my product but this is not an indicator as to whether there is a demand for the product. They are trying for free not buying. Im trying to think of it from different angles to be as efficient as possible:)

Which is why you survey the people before you given them any samples if you intend to. Then give them the sample, if that is next step, then survey again.

    Hello everyone.

I was listening to some entrepreneur and he said that successful founder constantly engage with their customers and this is what drives innovation. So what are the diff ways to engage with customers? are surveys one way? what could be others?

Hello @jemolian.i THINK i understood now the story:)
So either survey people then dev a product and give samples OR give samples of what im making and get feedback.

@Jemolian i was thinking of two points you mentioned as well previously

1-I asked why would the target audience use a cleansing oil and not a balm and here you said it boils down to branding, i need to create attractive branding to sell. But this goes opposite of what you said earlier where you said : do surveys, ask people questions why do they use a cleansing oil etc.So in that case i should first ask people what do they cleanse their face with cus if no one for instance ( extreme case) no one uses a cleansing oil do you think with solid marketing and branding i ll be able to sell sthg that no one uses?
Could you check this as im not sure i understood it well :)
    Thank you :)

So what are the diff ways to engage with customers? are surveys one way? what could be others?

Basically it’s just creating conversations with them. You can google the methods, surveying is just the main one.

why would the target audience use a cleansing oil and not a balm and here you said it boils down to branding, i need to create attractive branding to sell.

The long term sales depends on customer preferences. Branding or marketing can only get them to try the product.

So in that case i should first ask people what do they cleanse their face with cus if no one for instance ( extreme case) no one uses a cleansing oil do you think with solid marketing and branding i ll be able to sell sthg that no one uses?

Whether the branding and marketing can get them to buy the product and use it long term depends on whether it makes sense for them to use it.

Hi @Jemolian.I get it.So basically branding is great to build awareness of something we don’t know of but if i try that new product and turn out im not interested in it so even great branding wont make me buy.So there must be a NEED first

Polysorbate 80 is an irritant? I dont think so. In spite of your Internet research, I have over 40 years of personal hands-on experience with it. It is not an irritant, in fact, it is quite the opposite. It is my “go to” to prevent scalp irritation, when a client suddenly develops a sensitivity, or rash, to their current hair color formulation, and has never failed me in that result.

Of course- here is one link i read on Polysorbate 80 skin irritation effects.

    https://thedermreview.com/polysorbate-80/
There was another article i read but i cant remember the name.If i find it ill share it :)

This article is a perfect example of what a good source should not look like. Not only they make claims without supporting it with scientific evidence they also immediately suggest an alternative product to buy. It doesn’t prove Polysorbate 80 is irritating. It proves that those who wrote the article are biased and use fear marketing. Don’t get me wrong poly 80 isn’t a one size fit all perfect solution. But it is an old but gold bullet proof ingredient that is well researched, cheap, easily available and pretty multifunctional.

@Ducq I mix 15% of polysorbate 80 with high polarity ester (either alkyl benzoate or some types of CCT) and use it as cleansing oil to remove makeup including mascara. It got into my eyes on a multiple occasions and I didn’t even need to blink. More popular Cithrol 10 GTIS is more irritating. Totally anecdotal, and I am open to be proven wrong. But the article above doesn’t prove anything.

That blog is a marketing tool for the brands Carrot & Stick and Formulyst.  What they do is product reviews of well-known brands like Drunk Elephant, Skinceuticals, etc. and then always include Carrot & Stick and Formulyst products in the mix as a way of trying to create the impression that Carrot & Stick and Formulyst are competitive with that class of products.

Hello dear friends. I would like to know if you ever use Google Trends?  As you know by now im developing my cleansing oil but upon a quick research on Google Trends i found that cleansing oils are not popular. Or maybe i dont know how to read graphs on google trends/Can someone here offer some support please? Thank you very much to you all:)

Yes, I use Google Trends. Whether something is popular or not is all relative. Yes, cleansing oil is not popular compared to cleaners. https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?cat=44&date=today%205-y&geo=US&q=Cleansing%20oil,cleanser

But it is popular compared to something like..worms. https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?cat=44&date=today%205-y&geo=US&q=Cleansing%20oil,worms

What specifically are you hoping to learn from Google Trends?
(Perhaps you should start another discussion about this topic)

Hello @Perry. Thanks a lot for sharing this result from Google Trends. Well to answer your question as to what i want to learn from Google Trends.I want to know if my products are being searched for by people. So I tell myself if people are searching for a cleansing oil then i might have a product market fit and this means people are interested in this product.
Yes awesome idea Perry; i will start a discussion on this topic as well/

    Thank you so much

By the way Perry what are worms? Are you referring to the insect? What is the relationship between cleansing oil and worms?

I was referring to “worms” the animals (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worm).

There is no relationship between worms and cleansing oils. I was just demonstrating that you can use Google Trends to analyze the popularity of a search term, but the data is only useful if you are comparing two similar things.  As far as search goes “cleansing oil” is more popular “worms” but that doesn’t really tell you much.  So if you are going to use Google Trends you have to carefully define what you are comparing your search term to. Every term is more popular than some terms and much less popular than others.

Thanks Perry. So you are saying that it s pointless to just look for cleansing oil on its own to gauge whther enough people search for this term.I should compare cleansing oil VERSUS something else.

Ok speaking of cleansing oil; in your opinion what is  the most popular type of face cleanser and why? Here in Morocco in pharmacies and drugstores we find a lot of gel cleansers we dont have cleansing oils by the way except from some French brands like La Roche Posay; Roger Cavailles and few other brands like this but i tried the Roger Cavailles cleansing oil and i find it bland, its more like a gel to me in the texture not an oil.So this begs the question; should a cleansing oil hve the texture/consistency of an oil or a gel?

Thank you so much and i will open a discussion on Google Trends so people can share their opinion and experiences there 🙂

Well, you can search “cleansing oil” by itself but that will only tell you if interest in the topic is increasing or decreasing. As you can see from the graph interest in the topic had a little bump around May 2020, but it’s been pretty flat overall. Of course, that data is from the United States. You can do search in Morocco and the numbers are a little more even.  However, it’s ver low search volume for both terms if you just look at Morocco. https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?cat=44&date=today%205-y&geo=MA&q=Cleansing%20oil,cleanser

The term “cleansing oil” is a marketing term. It has no legal or scientific meaning. So, it could be a gel or a thin liquid. It all has to do with the expectations of the consumer and the story you want to tell.

I used to work on the product VO5 Hot Oil treatment. There was no “oil” in the product. It was a thickened polymer / cationic surfactant system.

I don’t know what is the most popular type of face cleanser. However, if you do a search on Amazon.com under “best sellers” you find the following.
    https://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Beauty-Personal-Care-Facial-Cleansing-Products/zgbs/beauty/11060901/ref=zg_bs_nav_beauty_3_11060711

Cerave seems very popular as do micellar waters. Looks like most things come out of a pump. It’s not easy to figure these things out. You have to investigate and make your best guesses.

    Hello everyone/
I tend to read a lot and love to share my knowledge with others.
I dont know if you heard of electrolyte but there are minerals like magnesium, potassium, copper; sodium and chloride, calcium and phosphate. they are very good for your skin and are vital to the funtion of the body.As a matter of fact our body is made of these essential minerals. They are electrically charged minerals that help the body do much of its function.

I was digging a little bit and little did i know that incorporating electrolyte to skincare make the product more potent because they keep the skin hydrated and  keep a balanced PH level.  Electrolytes attract water, which is why electrolyte creams theoretically help your skin retain moisture. So is it possible to include electrolytes to my cleansing oil?

    thank you

Dear Perry/ I perused the Amazon page you sent me and basically it shows the the best selling cleanser is either a foam or gel cleanser. But gel or foam cleansers are best  for oily to acne prone skin they are not suitable for dry and senstive skin and from a personal experience/I used a gel cleanser on my skin which is dry and it dried it even more and made it feel tight/So i learned recently when i started my skincare business that cleansing oil and balms have the advantage of suiting all skin type from oily to combo skin/

Because i telll myself okay so if even here in Morocco whats popular is gel cleanser then doing a cleansing oil liught not be popular although i educate people that they are good for all skin type/ Someone said your role is not to educate people at this stage; your role is to SELL; shall i go to gel cleanser or cleansing balm ( which are popular) or should i keep the cleansing oil?

    What do you guys think?
