    Sorry Grandma, ‘Love’ Is Not An FDA-Approved Ingredient

    A Food and Drug Administration warning letter lambastes a Massachusetts-based bakery for listing “love” in its granola.

    From the letter:

    1.    Your Nashoba Granola and Whole Wheat Bread (wholesale and retail) products are misbranded within the meaning of section 403(i)(2) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 343(i)(2)] because they are fabricated from two or more ingredients, but the labels fail to bear a complete list of all the ingredients by common or usual name in descending order of predominance by weight as well as all sub-ingredients, as required by 21 CFR 101.4. For example,
    • Your Nashoba Granola label lists ingredient “Love”. Ingredients required to be declared on the label or labeling of food must be listed by their common or usual name [21 CFR 101.4(a)(1). “Love” is not a common or usual name of an ingredient, and is considered to be intervening material because it is not part of the common or usual name of the ingredient.

    I think that the label is the least of their worries after reading the whole thing.

    This Contract Manufacturer’s employee had a different definition of what “Love” was as an ingredient; http://worldnewsdailyreport.com/cosmetic-lab-employee-admits-he-ejaculated-in-tanks-of-face-cream/

    @Bill_Toge We had a batchmaster once drop his pen into a smaller tank while the Arde Barinco Drop-in homogenizer was running.

    I have definitely seen soaps with “love” listed as an ingredient!  Glad they are finally catching up with some of these companies.

    @Microformulation Eeewww!

    My previous employer once had a possum fall into and drown in a batch of floor polish over the weekend.

    @ozgirl on a similar subject, we once received an IBC of propylene glycol that had a dead bird in it

    also, donkey’s years ago we used to import henna powder in bulk from Somalia, and when it came in it was usually full of foreign objects; mostly bits of wood, metal, plastic and rubber, so we had to sieve it and send it off to be irradiated before it could be used in production
