    I am preparing facial serum using carbomer940 as a base with Phenyl Benzimidazole Sulfonic Acid.It is water soluble sunscreen agent. The formulation is stable without sunscreen agent. But after adding sunscreen agent, after sometime the white lumps of carbomer are formed and floated on surface of product.
    The formulation is
    A
    Water-80.8
    Glycerine-3
    Carbomer 940-0.5
    T.E.A.-1
    B
    Watersoluble Shea butter-1
    PEG -12 Dimethicone-1
    C
    PBSA(sunscreen agent)-1
    Water-10
    T.E.A.-1
    Fragrance-0.2
    Preservative-0.5
    How can i stabilize formulation using sunscreen agent?

    Why are you including a sunscreen in this?

    There is most likely insufficient present for the product to marketed as an effective sunscreen and if it is there to stabilise the carbomer against UV degradation, then other materials can perform this function.

    I don’t know where you are located but, in most countries, any product claiming to be a sunscreen must have been tested to prove that it is a sunscreen and offer a numerical indication of the effectiveness.

    To save yourself a lot of marketing and regulatory problems, I suggest that you forget about including a sunscreen material.

    To help stabilise carbomer against UV degradation, one of the easiest ways is to use a chelating agent e.g a gluconate or EDTA.

    @Shubh123 I read that Phenyl Benzimidazole Sulfonic Acid has a required pH to be stable, around pH 7 if i’m not mistaken. You need to neutralize your mixture to dissolve the carbomer back into the solution and stabilize the sunscreen.

    if you want to protect the carbomer from UV light you’re better off using benzophenone-4; you only need about 0.1%, and it’s more soluble

    @johnb
    Thnx! I am located in India.
    The formula is stable using EDTA.

    @Bill_Toge
    Thnx for the help.
    The formula is now stable using PBSA with EDTA.

    I suggest, then that you forget about including a sunscreen/UV absorber and use a stable EDTA containing formula.

    At the level you are using PBSA, it will have little use in acting as a sunscreen in the powerful sunlight experienced in India.

    Now on day packaging material also available with Sunscreen agents so no need to add in the formulation.

    Sensient cosmetic technologies have some water soluble and stable sunscreen agent range

    Just curious. No actives in this serum apart from the SPF?

    When you’re selling dreams, what else is needed?

    @johnb, True. It contains fragrance, which will be enough for most.

    My thoughts exactly … Water, Glycerin, Carbomer, Water-Soluble Shea @ 1% … this isn’t even a product.
