  • Emulsifier for aftershower self-emulsifying oil

    Hello All,

I run a couple of experiments with self-emulsifying oil. The idea to mix oil with emulsifier, pour to a sprayer bottle and use on wet skin. I tried polyglyceryl 4 oleate and sorbitan oleate. Both seem to work but I will appreciate other inputs. What emulsifier is good for such a product? How much to use? Anything else to consider? Do I need a preservative (no water, closed bottle)? The list of ingredients is literally almond oil, tocopherol and emulsifier. Thank you all in advance.

Is there any reason to use a mix of low and high HLB emulsifiers in this type of system?

If they seemed to work, I’m not sure what you want to know.

How long do you want the product to be stable?  Have you done stability testing? The longer you want the product to last, the more likely you’ll need a better thought out emulsion system. You’ll also probably need a preservative system if the product is going to be sitting around for an extended period of time mixed with water (weeks, months).

Hi @Perry, thank you for your response. Since I have not made such a product before, I would like to know if there is any particular emulsifier that is prefered for this type of system. I chose polyglyceryl 4 oleate because it’s liquid and probably it’s not the best way of choosing an emulsifier (and I don’t have any benchmark commercial product in mind to see what is normally used). I skipped the preservative, because the product is in an airtight container and won’t have any contact with water. I guess it’s better to add a preservative to be safe.

have you tried polysorbate 85? let us know what you are trying to achieve?

@”Dr Catherine Pratt” I am trying to make an oil in a sprayer bottle, that will turn into a liquid emulsion once in contact with wet skin. It worked with low HLB emulsifiers that I experimented with. But my thinking process goes like this: if I use, say almond oil that has HLB of 6, should I mix sorbitan oleate (for example) with say polysorbate 80 or 20 (I don’t have 85) to bring the HLB of the emulsifiers to 6 or it doesn’t matter for this type of product? I know that balancing HLB is not a guaranree of a stable good performing product and there are other points to consider, but since I am not a chemist, I want to make sure I didn’t miss anything.
