I have been using cosmetic powders that can be taken internally for both external and internal applications. Does this forum have any supplement chemists? It would be for personal use only.

I would only say that there is no such thing as “cosmetic supplement”- IF a supplement works, it will enhance one’s health, therefore would have skin-effects as well.

…but there is such thing as marketing and gullible people.

First I would remove the word ‘cosmetic’. That is one of the lower standards in industry. I would elevate to ‘food grade’ if I were going to ingest it.

A number of us take supplements that we hope for a positive outcome on our exteriors. The brilliant George Deckner once wrote a piece on this….let me get you the link.

I take: lutein & zeaxanthin and astaxanthin and Hyaluronic acid with collagen orally every day, with my skin in mind.

i wasn’t sure if this forum was just for extermal cosmetic formulating. Now with major cosmetic corporations offering skin gummies, it looks like it could be something a cosmetic chemist might come across.

I have used Insolar in tablet form. It supports skin health and integrity. In my case, quite effective when I needed it.

Half of my job is developing dietary supplements - and it is easy enough to develop supplements that could be used along side cosmetics.

However, none of these are cosmetics - they are just supplements; and, depending on your jurisdiction and the level of claims you want to make; or ingredients (and sometimes quantities of ingredients) you want to make, these could be classed anywhere from food to pharmaceuticals.

The cosmetic industry has been trending in that direction. I’d like to formulate it for myself. I’ve been doing something similar for years now by mixing amla, sodium hyaluranate in a capsule but these are things I had been adding to my smoothie. I’d ideally like to increase my understanding of formulating this type of supplement because that is what consumers are demanding.

The ‘beauty from within’ trend has been increasing over the last 10-15 years. Most now are just based on bovine collagen with a few other nutritional ‘sprinkles’ thrown in.

Just in case someone is interested in good old evidence-based science, here are some interesting systematic reviews on the topic of supplements 🙂

    1) https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5227980/

    2) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK72264/

    3) https://www.cochrane.org/CD007176/LIVER_antioxidant-supplements-for-prevention-of-mortality-in-healthy-participants-and-patients-with-various-diseases

And those are for the most studied supplements. The rest lack of sufficient evidence, and that gives room for all types of health claims.

Liver failure is a huge issue too. I was able to reverse some serious health issues with diabetes but these are the ones that are well studied and recommended by my doctors.
