  • Dissolve Cetyl Alcohol in shampoo?

Posted by HienPham_81 on March 21, 2024 at 12:01 am

I’ am studying shampoo formulation using fatty alcohol such as Cetyl Alcohol helps improving slip and moisture once washing wet. But I could’t dissolve Cetyl Alcohol. May I have a guide on this case. My formulation as below:

    PHASE A: Water 77,5%

    Peg-120 2,6%

    Decyl Gluscoside: 5%

    CAPB: 9,5%

    PHASE B: Glycerin: 1,5%

    CTAC: 0,3%

    edta: 0,1%

    PHASE C- OIL

    Cetyl Alcohol: 1%

    Essential oil: 1,4%

    peg-40: 0,4%

    EHPG: 0,8%

At phase C, Melting point of cetyl alcohol is 49oC, totally melted around under 70oC. This make essential oil vaporized and cound”t keep its benefit although cover up the lid. Then we mix with other phase how to dissolve Cetyl alcohol entirely. Kindly help to advises.

There are no benefits from using esencial oils, hehe. Jones aside, when using fatty alcohol in a shampoo, you do what P&G does, which is making a premix with water, surfactant and fatty alcohol. This gives what it’s called a lamellar gel network. This premix is later cooled and then added to the rest of the product. I advise you to check on some P&G shampoo patents.

Thank you for your guidance. May I make a trial batch beginning with thickener/ surfactant/ water premix heated, fatty alcohol boiled in water bath under 70oC then mix them together at the same temperature. Is this right?

I think fatty alcohol soluble in oil so I put it in oil phase.

      regards
